I've spent the majority of this week on calls speaking to so many passionate coaches finding out about their struggles, wins and what they need help with to best help their athletes.

After spending the last few years working one to one with people in leading roles at their clubs, I'm excited to start this new project bringing together groups to learn and share experiences.

If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, drop me a DM.

The pickup can get easily over complicated, but if you're prepared well enough it can feel a bit more simple.

The key factors are getting the blade locked in the water, getting good tension and connection between the stretcher and the handle and creating a feeling of hanging that you can maintain as you extend the legs.

None of those things require a pull on the handle or trying to add force with the trunk (the trunk HOLDS force here) .

Think about the pickup being dominated by force on the foot stretcher.

How do you like to think about the pickup?

If you're a head / senior coach or a program leader, self motivation is an essential skill.

Just remember that absolutely no one has an unlimited amount of motivation and drive and even the most successful person you know has days where getting the job done feels like a struggle.

I'm a sucker for a good motivation quote or info graphic, but honestly most of these make a lot more sense when you've already been through some bad periods πŸ˜‚

What's your favourite quote or thought for when times are tough?

I've no idea where most of these came from so if I stole your post just DM me for credit 🀝

Be proactive in your pursuit of simple and controlled movement, not reactive to movements of the boat.

Half the time you're just reacting to yourself anyway, then you make consistency almost impossible.

The reason good crews and scullers make it look easy is the simplicity - they do only the movements that are required and none that are not.

Think of it as a line - on one side you have 'positive influence on the boat, the other you have' negative influence on the boat'

If any of your movements fall onto the negative side, get rid of them.

Which side of the line are you mostly on?

Drop an emoji in the comments if you'd like to get more in depth knowledge on force curves and all things telemetry and biomechanics.

This is my most simple explanation possible for each part of the curve and, more importantly, what that looks like in reality in the boat.

Your drive : recovery ratio changes as you go from paddling speed to race pace from around 2:1 to 1:1 (give or take a few %)

When changing pace, try not to shorten up - the recovery phase is quicker but not shorter. It's a very important difference to understand.

Also remember that length in the drive is created by length on the recovery - if you don't get out to a long catch angle you run the risk of doing too much at the back end and putting yourself into the wrong rhythm.

Keep the length and stay loose as you build and the rate and speed will come.

Give this a try before your next head race.

There are multiple ways to achieve the same outcome - I wanted to share this to highlight a few things:

1️⃣ Drills are a means to an end, so choose one that creates the feeling you're looking for.
2️⃣ You don't need to do loads of strokes of a drill to get the benefit, don't waste time doing it for 5 minutes when you can feel the change in 5 strokes
3️⃣ Immediate feedback goes a long way
4️⃣ Highlight the gap between what you're doing an what you're trying to do, sometimes that makes a lot of sense compared to just focusing on the drill itself.

Thanks to George for allowing me to share this one!

George won't shout about this enough so I will πŸ‘‡

Today's win in the Scullers Head completes the 'Grand Slam' set of a win in every major Tideway race: The Boat Race and HORR in the 8+, Fours Head in the 4x, pairs head in a 2x and both the Wingfield Sculls and Scullers Head in the 1x.

The dedication and the versatility to be able to do this is pretty unique, to say the least.

How many years til the Vets Head? πŸ‘€
