At The Southern Percussion Academy we’re on a mission to teach and support percussionists of all ages and standards, promote best practice and maintain the highest possible standards in our shared profession. We support the percussionists of tomorrow through our Young Artist’s Platform and the International Southern Percussion Competition and we’re very active in our local community, offering free learning and participation workshops in schools and care homes via our roadshow.

It was Katy's birthday last week and she bought cakes for the office (we respond well to bribery in the form of food)!

We had a selection of the most beautiful cakes fresh from Wilma's Bakery .

So a BIG thank you to all at Wilma's in Rayleigh for satiating our sweet tooth!

Ever wondered how we teach the really little ones about music rhythm?

We like to use animal words! (plus Mel likes to colour in the pictures 😜)

It doesn't have to be animal words either. You can use anything that captures your imagination and fits the rhythm.

Now that Southern Percussion Academy has officially launched, we think it's time you got to know the team:

Katy is the founder and director of Southern Percussion.
Music has been a part of her life since she was tiny. She has worked as a professional percussionist, all over the world and alongside household names.
She has a passion for inspiring a love of music in both adults and children and helping those she tutors to become the best they can be.
She is a proud momma of a beautiful little girl who is also a dab hand at all things artistic.
In her spare time Katy likes to...... (are you kidding? Did you read all that? She doesn't have spare time 😂)

Mel is the most recent addition to the team.
A former actress and saxophonist, she also has a deep love of music and the arts. Although she will certainly not be teaching you percussion any time soon (she's also taking lessons from Katy), she will be your go to for all things admin. Any questions you have about scheduling, pricing, problem solving or her cat Greg, she will be happy to answer them all!
