At Advocate Neurodivergence we recognise that behaviour is an expression of need. We aim to share knowledge and understanding of autism and other neurodivergent differences to enable us to provide children with the tools and environment they need to do well. We offer bespoke training sessions for parents and teachers and individual support and advice including strategies and reports that can successfully be used in the EHCP application process. We were asked by a professional recently if we could provide a checklist for teachers to use to help identify an individual’s areas of need. At first we were hesitant for many reasons – we are not here to diagnose, autism is so vast and varies from person to person, and from situation to situation – but what we have developed is a guide of differences a teacher might notice when considering an individuals need. We often talk about the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ – why we are seeing certain behaviours, and how we can adapt and provide the right tools and environment for the most beneficial support. This guide provides the ‘what’ that comes before the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ – helping us to focus in on what behaviours are we noticing and what needs are being communicated.

Collaboration between families and schools is so important when providing for need in the best possible way, so it was fantastic to work with so many dedicated staff at St James’ CE Primary School in Haslingden this week. We gained some lovely positive feedback and were able to share strategies which can be quickly and easily implemented - thanks for having us St James’! A huge thankyou to the wonderful parents and staff at Barden Primary School and The Nest for another fantastic workshop. This time we explored strategies to support autistic children at home and shared our own experiences, thoughts and feelings. What an empowering afternoon!

This quote was from a lovely parent we met at a recent training session. We believe our training is so powerful and beneficial because it is from people with lived experience of autism and neurodivergence. We have stood in your shoes. We have felt every emotion in advocating for our own children. We are proud to be autistic led and to lead our training and consultancy with the insight of being autistic and neurodivergent ourselves, and having autistic and neurodivergent children, siblings, colleagues and friends. We are also teachers with over 40 years combined experience of schools and the education system, placing us in a unique position to work with and support families and schools where we put the individual at the heart of everything we do.
