The Day Nursery has been welcoming children since 1874. Extensive grounds and spacious rooms. Raw We are a member of the National Day Nursery Association.

The Day Nursery was originally St Nicholas Primary School from 1874 until 2006. These premises are ideal for a Day Nursery where the grounds and the rooms are resourced for the different stages of a child’s development.

🧁 Welcome to Our Little Bakery! 👩‍🍳✨

Our bakery is open for business, and there are some very creative cakes and biscuits on the menu!

Supporting this week's theme of materials, the children have been exploring how all sorts of different objects can be transformed through imaginative play. Wooden discs became cakes and biscuits, ready to be decorated with shaving foam "icing", sprinkles, colourful pasta flowers and pom poms.

There are plenty of skills being put to work behind the bakery counter too! The children are practising spreading their icing with knives, shaking and spraying the shaving foam with control, and carefully using their pincer grip to pick up tiny toppings and place them onto their creations.

All of that squeezing, gripping, spreading and sprinkling helps strengthen little hands and develop the fine motor control they'll use for everything from getting dressed independently to mark-making and early writing.

Most importantly, the children are being given the freedom to experiment with different materials, use their imaginations and decide exactly what their bakery creations should look like.

We're just hoping someone remembers to save us a slice... 🧁💛

🪐 Little Artists Exploring the Planets! 🎨✨

Our budding space explorers have been getting creative, independently painting their own planets and choosing how to bring each one to life with colour.

The children carefully used their paintbrushes to make marks across the different patterns and textures on their planets, giving them the freedom to experiment with colour and create something completely their own.

Independent painting gives children the opportunity to make their own creative choices while developing confidence and self-expression. Controlling the paintbrush also helps strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, building some of the important foundations they'll later use for mark-making and early writing.

A little creativity, a little space exploration and some very colourful planets in the making! 🪐🚀

🐛 Bringing Superworm to Life! 📚✨

Today the children stepped right into the wonderful world of Superworm with our story-inspired tuff tray!

As they explored the different materials and characters within the tray, we revisited some of the familiar phrases, rhymes and chants from the story. The children loved recognising parts they remembered and joining in, building their confidence to anticipate what might come next.

Story-based sensory play is a brilliant way to make books feel even more exciting. Hearing and repeating rhyming words helps children tune into sounds and patterns in language, an important foundation for early literacy, while familiar phrases encourage memory, vocabulary and communication skills.

And by bringing the story off the page and into their play, the children were able to explore Superworm in their own way, using their senses, imagination and plenty of storytelling along the way. 🪱💛

🌙 Our Tiny Space Experts! ✨

Inspired by the recent eclipse, the children have been getting creative and making their very own twinkling moons!

As we chatted about the eclipse and shared who had seen it, the children got to work using tissue and white paint to dab, dab, dab inside a circular stencil. Then came the exciting bit, lifting the stencil to reveal their moon underneath! 🌙

Next, they carefully used cotton buds to dot stars across their night skies before adding the all-important finishing touch... glitter! ✨ A little shake transformed their paintings into sparkling celestial scenes, and we had some very proud little artists admiring their finished creations.

Activities inspired by real-world events are a wonderful way to turn children's natural curiosity into learning. Alongside exploring space and the world around them, painting, dabbing and dotting help develop fine motor control, creativity and confidence in using different tools and materials.

And judging by the finished masterpieces, we may have a few future astronomers and artists in our midst! 🚀

👣 A Sensory Adventure from Start to Splash! 💦✨

This morning, the children enjoyed exploring a sensory trail filled with exciting textures to discover. As they walked barefoot through tinfoil, bubble wrap, straw, soil, tissue paper and finally cold water, they experienced how each material felt beneath their feet.

Throughout the activity, we talked about the different textures, encouraging the children to describe what they could feel and compare each surface. There were lots of curious expressions as they explored each new sensation, but the biggest smiles came when they reached the cold water, where they couldn't resist making some wonderfully big splashes! 💦

Sensory play like this helps children learn about the world through hands-on experiences. Exploring a variety of natural and everyday materials encourages curiosity, builds confidence and supports communication as children develop the vocabulary to describe what they see, feel and experience. Walking across different surfaces also helps to develop balance, coordination and body awareness in a fun and engaging way.

🐮 On the Farm with Our Favourite Animals! 🐥🐰

Today, the children had lots of fun exploring life on the farm as they learned about different farm animals, the sounds they make and the young animals that live there. From cheerful moos and noisy oinks to fluffy chicks and hopping rabbits, there were plenty of smiles as everyone joined in.

As we played, we counted the chicks and rabbits together, helping the children develop their early counting skills while building confidence in recognising numbers. Talking about the animals and copying their sounds also encouraged communication and language, introducing new vocabulary in a playful and memorable way.

Farm-themed activities are a wonderful way to spark curiosity about the world around us. Through singing, counting and imaginative play, the children were developing their language, mathematical understanding and social confidence, all while having lots of fun together.

🐸 Jump, Count, Leap! 🌟

This morning the children had lots of fun practising their jumping skills as they moved from spot to spot, counting each jump along the way. There were plenty of smiles as they challenged themselves to land on each spot while saying the numbers out loud together.

Activities like this are a fantastic way to develop gross motor skills, helping children build balance, coordination and body control through active play. Counting as they jumped also supported their early mathematical development, encouraging number recognition and one-to-one counting in a fun and engaging way.

By combining movement with learning, the children were developing confidence in their physical abilities while strengthening important skills that support their everyday development. It was wonderful to see everyone encouraging one another and celebrating each successful jump!

🚜 Working Together on the Farm! 🐄🌾

This morning, the children enjoyed creating their very own farm scenes using our interactive Velcro farm board. As they chose different animals, buildings and farm pieces, they carefully matched and attached them to the board, bringing their farm to life together.

It was wonderful to watch the children play alongside one another, taking turns, sharing resources and chatting about where each piece belonged. Through cooperative play, they developed their friendships, learned to work together and celebrated each other's ideas as they built their farm.

Activities like this help children develop important social and emotional skills. Working together encourages communication, sharing and turn-taking, while giving children the confidence to build positive relationships with their peers in a fun and supportive environment.

💧 Colourful Water Play Discoveries 🎨✨

Today the children enjoyed exploring coloured water, experimenting with mixing different colours to see what new shades they could create. It was exciting to watch their curiosity grow as they discovered colours such as gold and green, talking about the changes they could see as they mixed them together.

The children also practised carefully pouring the coloured water into smaller jugs, showing fantastic control and concentration as they completed the task. Activities like this help children develop hand-eye coordination and the fine motor skills needed for everyday tasks, while building confidence in their growing independence.

Water play is a wonderful way to encourage exploration and conversation. As the children experimented with colour mixing, they developed their understanding of cause and effect, expanded their colour vocabulary and learned through hands-on discovery in a calm and engaging environment.

🍝 A Taste of Italy Through Sensory Play! 🇮🇹✨

As part of our Around the World theme, the children travelled to Italy through a wonderfully messy sensory experience! Using spaghetti with tomato sauce and cheese, along with pots, pans, cutlery, serving utensils and tongs, they enjoyed preparing their own imaginative pasta dishes.

The activity quickly became a collaborative cooking adventure, with the children confidently suggesting extra ingredients to add to their meals. We heard lots of fantastic ideas including olives, peppers, chicken and ham, as the children chatted together, mixed their ingredients and carefully cut the spaghetti using the utensils provided.

Sensory activities like this are a fantastic way to encourage communication and language development. As children describe what they're doing, introduce new words and share ideas with their friends, they naturally expand their vocabulary while building confidence in conversations. Exploring different textures, pretending to cook and working together also supports imaginative play, problem-solving and social skills.
