A team of us from South West Upholstery school will be joining in with The Bath 50 Ultra Challenge this year on Saturday 29th March, raising funds for Dementia UK. We’ll be walking the 50km ultra! 😅 … wish us luck and please donate, if you’re able to 🙏 50 km !!!??? That’s some challenge 🥴

We are cock-a-hoop to share the news that our Helen won 3rd place at The Upholders Livery Company National Upholstery Awards 2025 held at the NEC Birmingham on Sunday. Helen completed the AMUSF Stage 3 Diploma with us last summer and, along with her husband, runs the successful Walker and Walker of Bath soft furnishings business.
We are so proud of her achievements, very well deserved! 🥳👏🥳👏🥂🍾

So lovely to see our Rosie back in the workshop today! 😊 Rosie completed the AMUSF Diploma with us 2 years ago and has gone on to great success, she’s a talented young lady.
She came in today to talk about her incredible achievements winning the Heico Upholstery Design competition and the British Furniture Manufacturers award in 2023 with her beautiful chair which she designed, built the frame and upholstered. We miss you Rosie and celebrate your success with you!

Southwest Upholstery School fundraiser for Breast Cancer Now Help Jo CARN raise money to support Breast Cancer Now

We started out just the 2 of us running Southwest Upholstery School - Tony as the upholstery trainer and Director of the company and myself, Jo, who looks after the admin side and all too infrequently the social media posts …. I know, I really must try harder! 🥴

A few photos for those interested. Ben Nevis climb beautiful and sunny. Scafell Pike and Snowdonia were climbed mostly in the dark so not many photos. They were lucky with the weather ….. no rain at all, just a bit misty and windy on Snowdonia- unlike here where it’s not stopped !!! ☔️💦🛶

We are so happy to introduce Kathy to our teaching group. 😊

With a background in commercial sewing and teaching textile-crafts to children as an extracurricular subject, she brings her keen eye for detail and a lifelong obsession for fabrics to the world of upholstery.

Kathy’s passion for working with textiles began as soon as she was able to hold a needle and crochet hook, growing up in a family where most of the women were stitching in some form or another at every opportunity. She first attended an upholstery class 13 years ago, when she recovered an Edwardian armchair using an inherited vintage textile and was immediately drawn in to the creative potential that upholstery offers.

She completed her AMUSF Diploma course here at SWUS and was awarded 3rd place in the David James Student Award with The Guild of Traditional Upholsterers. She was also a finalist in the first National Upholstery Awards for AMUSF double distinction graduates with The Worshipful Company of Upholders of the City of London.

Kathy has been running her own upholstery business () for four years and moved to an idyllic studio space on The Mendips eighteen months ago.
Her joy of upholstery comes from transforming furniture using the multi-layered techniques of both the modern and traditional upholstery processes and if there is also a chance to push creative boundaries, then all the better. She is passionate about passing on these skills, helping others to unlock the beauty in every chair.

… and we’re off to a good start with the new term. Our AMUSF Stage 3 Diploma students are getting to grips with egg chairs and iron frame chairs 😅🥴

The students who couldn’t be at our presentation day received their Stage 2 certificates for their achievements (of which there were many ☺️)
Congratulations to Sarah, Penny, Nicky, Amy and Gaye 🥳🏅🥳🏅 Amy wasn’t with us yesterday so Tony took pride in displaying your certificate 😊 So proud of you all!

It was a family affair this weekend! These guys were great fun and look what they achieved over the weekend on an upholstery leisure course 👏👏👏
