My child is not allowed to go to prom because he disengaged with school.
He is not "naughty," "disruptive," or "disrespectful," but has missed school and been regularly late due to underlying issues.
I’d like some opinions, please.
I believe prom is a significant milestone that shouldn't be used as a tool for behavior management.
Many students have faced various challenges at school: some display challenging behaviors, some are anxious, and some act out. There are always reasons behind it.
This current Year 11 has faced a complete high school career of disruption with COVID, strikes, online learning, isolation, and now they are expected to achieve as if this never happened to them.
These students have already been held accountable through appropriate disciplinary measures during their school years. It's essential to provide them with a positive final memory of their school experience.
So what is your opinion. Should prom be used as a behavioural tool. Should all year 11 be allowed to have the one event that they will never have again?
