A quick message for new Year 5 11+ parents.

I have been asked, a couple of times, why I haven’t sent home a list of workbooks and resources which need to be bought for September. It’s because you don’t need them.

I will be providing everything your child will need to be able to complete the course. As soon as they start I will be giving each child a Schofield and Sims English skills workbook and a personal folder of resources. Every month they will be provided with an online package of instructional videos, games and activities to support the maths we have been learning. All in session resources and equipment will be provided by myself.

You can, of course, buy supporting materials for your child, if you would like to. Once I have begun teaching them, I will be able to offer ideas and resources for individual children, and you are very welcome to get in touch about this.

I understand that tuition is a significant outlay for parents. You shouldn’t then be paying out more money, to be able to access the learning you are already paying for.

One item which is never a poor purchase, is a book. Get children reading interesting, challenging books, on a wide range of topics and subjects. If you want to spend your money well, buy books, read with your children and demonstrate your own love of reading. This is always money well spent 😊

A note for my current Y5 11+ parents.

We are now two weeks away from the test and it can be a confusing time. This is absolutely not a time for cramming, taking more mock exams or trying to fit in hours of practise. The only things that will be achieved are stress and burnout.

Now that children are going back to school, any revision should be light touch, little and often. Trying to stop children from doing any revision, can lead to stress in itself, so the aim is to keep things calm, keep skills ticking along and keep pressure away from the situation.

I am looking forward to the next two weeks and I know the children will be looking forward to seeing their regular group members.

I also know how hard children (and families) have worked this year. We are nearly there! 😊

If anyone hasn’t replied to last week’s email, containing the terms and conditions for September, I would be really grateful if you could reply with the word RECEIVED. I just want to make sure everyone is getting important emails. Thank you 😊

Just letting you know that emails about September have gone out this morning. You might need to check your junk box 😊

There is an awful lot of confusion around the new FSCE 11+ tests.

If there is anything you would like to know, here is the place you can ask. As things are still a little up in the air, there are answers that I won’t be able to give you yet. However, I have been researching the test for quite some time now, so may well be able to answer a lot of your queries.

You do not need to have a student in one of my classes. I am happy to answer questions from anyone. Only one of us should have to trawl through all the paperwork!

I will leave this as a pinned post, so that people can come back to it.

Summer tuition is a little different. There is more water and there are more fans 😊 but apart from that, the learning goes on.

We keep things fun, whilst getting lots covered. It is one of my favourite times with 11+ students, as they are more confident in their learning. This week, the children were showing their “missing code” problem solving ability, by creating their own problems for others to solve.

There is a mock on Monday, and results can be collected from Tuesday afternoon.

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer!

Reminder: Invoices for August should be paid by the end of today.

28/07/2026

All mock packages can be collected from this afternoon. I will be in the office:
Tuesday 3:00-6:00
Wednesday 4:00-7:00
Thursday 3:30-6:00

What do 11+ tutors do on their holidays?

Take a holiday in Milton Keynes, so that they can go to Bletchley Park and buy code breaking puzzle books 🙈. This genuinely is my idea of a good time. I wouldn’t have cracked the Enigma code, but they might have found a use for me somewhere.

I hope everyone is having a good start to the holidays, whether you are off to Malaga or Milton Keynes 😊

Don’t forget, mock exams, 1:1s and summer groups are all back on next week.

Have a lovely weekend!
Vic

Invoices have gone out a little early, as I am away for a few days this week. You are still welcome to get in touch, but it may take me a little longer to respond 😊

I cannot believe how quickly another year has gone! It seems only 5 minutes since I was putting welcome booklets into folders.

I feel it goes so quickly, because it is a job I love, that keeps me very busy, where I get to work with the best (small) people. I am delighted that so many of you are staying on, and I can’t wait to meet my many new students. With 50 people already signed up for September, it’s going to be another busy, lovely year.

I have also heard from some past parents, over the last week, which always brings me a lot of joy. It is wonderful to see how high the children continue to fly, after they have left me and their tutoring journey behind. I am happy to be a positive footnote in lives that are just beginning to grow. Success looks different for every child. It might come quickly or grow a little more slowly, all at once or in little steps. I value every success, whatever it looks like and whenever it comes.

Have a wonderful summer!
Vic 😊
