Gabby's Childminding Services My name is Gabby. I am a childminder living in Ridgeway Farm, on the outskirts of Swindon. I am a qualified teacher and a former KS1 and EYFS lead.

My passion is encouraging learning through play.

And so after 3 and a half years it is with a heavy heart that I closed my doors for the last time today.

During that time, I have cared for 13 wonderful children, who have brought such joy not only to my life but also to my children’s lives too, each and every day. Thank you for the smiles, the laughs and for making every day a new and exciting adventure. You all hold a special place in my heart. Thank you also to the parents for trusting me with your precious children. It’s truly been an honour. I hope this farewell is a ‘see you soon’ rather than a goodbye.

And so all that’s left for me to say is Merry Christmas. Enjoy the time with your loved ones ❤️

Today we worked together to make our own play dough.

We carefully counted how many spoonfuls of the ingredients we needed. Then we mixed it all together, taking turns really nicely. It wasn’t very easy to stir so we had to use our big, strong muscles and then we squished it all together with our hands.

We’ve loved using the dough to be creative! So far we’ve made pumpkins, scary monsters and dinosaurs. We talked lots about the names and colours of the shapes we used too.

I can’t wait to see what we’ll make with it later!

I started the day a little unsure about how we were going to spend our time on this wet day. I should have guessed that the children would know just what to do…

A very simple activity; playing with the small world animals, quickly evolved into a wonderfully creative project which engaged the children for well over an hour.

All five children (aged 22 months to 10 years) worked together to design and create their own habitats for the different animals. We had a zoo, a farm and even a dinosaur world!

Their creativity blew me away and I truly enjoyed sitting back and listening to the conversations going on between the children. Their problem solving skills, teamwork and engagement were exceptional.

That was a soggy summer holiday day well spent!

What better thing to do on a wet day than make your own play doh?!

The older children worked so hard as a team to make up the dough, sharing resources and taking turns. As they worked they talked lots about their ideas and what they were doing, extending the vocabulary of the younger children. They had to use their maths knowledge to ensure they had the correct ratio of ingredients. At first the dough was too dry and then too wet so there were lots of opportunities for problem solving too! They then dyed the dough, mixing different colours to make the colour that they wanted. It was interesting to see how the colours changed!

Once the playdoh was made, the children enjoyed making sausage and ball shapes, using their fine motor skills to mould the dough. It was so squishy! They then used all sorts of tools and cutters, making ‘food items’, faces showing different emotions and all kinds of shapes. Some children extended this further, cutting their shapes into quarters!

Wow, so much learning and fun from one simple rainy day activity! They were busy for well over an hour 😊

I’m excited to announce that I have an EYFS space becoming available from the end of July. I have recently been graded as good by Ofsted.

I am based in Ridgeway Farm and the space available is for Monday and Tuesday, between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

We have shown a particular interest in creepy crawlies recently and have loved spotting them when out and about. For this reason, I set up a spiders web with lots of different insects trapped inside. The children loved it!

I was so impressed by the fine motor skills of the little ones, who used tweezers to carefully pull the different bugs out. We enjoyed naming the insects we caught, discussing how they are the same and different, and also sung lots of songs about them. The favourite was definitely ‘Incy Wincy Spider.’ We counted so many legs on the spider and were fascinated to find out more about them, reading all sorts of interesting facts in our creepy crawly book.

Today we wrapped up warm and enjoyed a local walk, looking closely the animals and plants around us.

We took the time to appreciate the wildlife we could see. The squirrels, in particular, were very friendly and came really close to us so we could have a good look at them. There were lots of interesting sounds to talk about too and we listened carefully to the birds and the dogs we could hear.

Spring is finally on the way and there were lots of signs to see. We enjoyed talking about the colours of the beautiful flowers we saw.

We all love our outdoor adventures and are looking forward to continuing them as the weather warms up!

Today we celebrated Pancake Day!

We all worked together to mix up the batter for our pancakes, learning lots of new vocabulary as we did so. We loved sharing the final result with our friends. Pancakes are yummy!

We also made our own pancakes using gloop and lots of different tools to mix, squish and splat. We were fascinated by how the mixture could be both a liquid and a solid. So much fun!

Today we celebrated Valentine’s Day a little early as we won’t all be together next week.

We used all sorts of tools and methods to retrieve hidden hearts and pom poms in the ice cubes. We were very interested in the melting ice and were fascinated to see that blue and red coloured water combined to create purple!

We also made some gorgeous little love bug biscuits 😍
