After half term, the children in Year 1 received a small, plastic pot through the post. In the pot were four tiny caterpillars and a layer of caterpillar food. Over the next couple of weeks the children watched, in amazement, as the caterpillars rapidly grew bigger and fatter before forming their chrysalises on the lid of the pot.

The children then had to wait patiently for the butterflies to develop inside. Some of them were lucky enough to see one of the chrysalises wriggling and moving as the transformation was taking place.

Unfortunately, all four butterflies emerged from their chrysalises over a weekend. However, Mrs Bacon found a video showing what happens and the children were able to watch this instead.

Over the next few days, the children watched the butterflies slowly opening and closing their wings to dry them out. They also discovered how butterflies feed, using their long curled up tongue, called a proboscis, to sip juice from the pieces of fruit we put in the habitat.

Last Thursday it was time to set the butterflies free. Two were a little reluctant to leave, so we left them sat on a bush so they could leave in their own time. The other two were ready for their next adventure though and quickly flew up out of the habitat and with the children cheering and waving good bye they were soon gone.

To support their learning, the children have been looking at information books on butterflies and garden bugs and some created colourful open out butterflies, showing their life cycle
