What a fabulous evening at celebrating Oktoberfest! Amazing food, a brilliant atmosphere and plenty of conversation about Germany, its language and culture. And, of course, lots of speaking German! 🥨💬

GCSE French, German & Spanish parents, how would your child do?

Show them the writing question in this post and ask them one thing:

“Talk me through how you would answer this.”

Not what French/German/Spanish vocabulary do you know?

But how would you actually approach the question?

Would they think about making a clear point for each bullet?

Adding an opinion?

Developing their ideas with reasons, details and examples?

Would they spot where they need different time frames and think about how they could show a stronger range of grammar across their answer?

Or would their plan be:

“I’d just start writing and see what I can think of…”

Because that’s where lots of students get stuck.

They can know vocabulary.

But that doesn’t automatically mean they know how to turn it into a strong GCSE writing answer.

They need a strategy.

That’s why I teach students my simple 3-step structure:

Point → Opinion → Develop

And I’ve turned it into a FREE GCSE French, German & Spanish writing resource your child can use at home.

Things I don’t feel guilty about as a GCSE French, German and Spanish teacher 👀

1️⃣ Not teaching students every word they might see in an exam. They will come across words they don’t know. I teach them how to use context, spot clues and keep going.

2️⃣ Using English to explain an exam strategy. If it helps a student understand what to do, I’ll use it.

3️⃣ Coming back to the same skills week after week. Understanding a strategy once is a start. Practising it until it feels natural is where confidence grows.

4️⃣ Giving students challenging questions. They deserve the chance to tackle ambitious work, with the support and strategies to succeed.

GCSE Languages students don’t build confidence by simply doing more exam questions.

They need to know how to approach them.

That’s exactly what we work on in my GCSE French, German and Spanish Confidence Clubs.

Every session has a clear focus.

We retrieve skills and strategies we’ve already learnt.

I teach a new strategy and model how to use it.

We practise it together using real exam-style questions.

Then students have a go independently.

And we check their confidence again at the end.

But it doesn’t stop when the session finishes.

Students revisit previous strategies in future sessions so they’re not just learning something once and forgetting it.

We keep practising.

We keep retrieving.

We keep applying those strategies to different questions.

Until students start looking at an exam task and thinking:

“I know what to do here.”

That’s the confidence I want them to walk into their GCSE exams with. ❤️

This week’s example happens to be GCSE Listening, but we use the same approach across Reading, Writing and Speaking too.

Good tuition isn’t about grand promises or simply keeping students busy for 45 minutes.

It’s about understanding what each student needs, teaching them strategies that genuinely help and giving them enough supported practice for those strategies to become second nature.

I won’t promise your child a particular grade. I will plan carefully, explain clearly, adapt the level of challenge and help them understand exactly how to approach their GCSE exams.
