Kirkham Grammar School

Kirkham Grammar School Kirkham Grammar School is one of the UK's top independent schools for children aged 2 to 18.

Kirkham Grammar School (KGS) is a leading independent day and boarding school for children aged two to 18. The school has a rich history and marked its 475-year anniversary in 2025. KGS is known for its elite co-curricular programme, which integrates academic excellence with a strong focus on sport, music and the arts. This holistic approach ensures pupils excel academically, socially and emotiona

lly. Centuries of Christian tradition underpin the education provided by Kirkham Grammar School, which was founded in 1549. Indeed its roots can be traced back to the chantry school attached to St. Michael’s Church, Kirkham, as long ago as the thirteenth century and it was here, in the Church grounds, that the school remained until it moved to occupy its present site on Ribby Road in 1911. In 1585 the Thirty Men of Kirkham, a group which administered parish business, took control of the school. It appears that they did not always perform their duties particularly well, for, by the early part of the seventeenth century, the school had fallen into disrepair and had been without a master for seven years. Isabell Birley, a humble alehouse keeper, came to the rescue in 1621, presenting the Thirty Men of Kirkham with £30 in her apron for the restoration of the school. In 1655 Henry Colburn, an old boy of the school, left money and land to the school in his will, putting it in the trust of the Company of Drapers in London. Then began a long and cherished partnership between the Company and the School, which has continued to the present day, though the Drapers surrendered control of the school in 1944, having endowed it with large and impressive extensions in 1938. Independent status ceased temporarily in 1944 when the school became a voluntary-aided boys’ grammar school. A further major extension, the Norwood Science Building was opened in 1965 and subsequently extended. In 1979 the Board of Governors took the bold decision to revert to independent status and Kirkham Grammar School became a co-educational school for the first time in its history. The last decade of the twentieth century witnessed a remarkable growth in the school’s popularity and standing, exhibited by a rise in pupil numbers from 500 to 900 and a spectacular programme of continuous development.

✨The summer break has been anything but quiet at KGS…✨

Our Facilities team have been busy behind the scenes over the summer, with some fantastic school enhancement projects underway.

First up: a brand-new professional lighting and sound system for the Summerlee Hall, combining stage luminaires, mixing consoles, speakers and digital control networks to create the perfect setup for live performances.

With some exciting performances already in the diary for the 2026/2027 academic year, it was only fair that our pupils had the very best platform on which to showcase their talents.

A huge thank you to the Friends of KGS for facilitating this fantastic enhancement – and of course, to our Facilities Team, led by Mr Ingram (pictured) for managing the installation process.

We can't wait to see (and hear!) it in action.

What a fantastic three days for our Third Year pupils!

As preparation for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, pupils took part in an action-packed residential featuring high ropes, raft building, archery, abseiling, orienteering, teamwork challenges and campfire cooking.

They put their camping skills to the test, supported one another through every challenge and showed fantastic resilience, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout. We are incredibly proud of how brilliantly they represented KGS.

A huge thank you to our wonderful staff, catering team and, of course, Miss Newton for keeping everyone cool with a much-needed supply of ice pops and chilled water! ☀️

We cannot wait to see them build on these experiences during their Bronze DofE expeditions in October. 🎒

✨Celebrating KGS Alumni Success✨

It is difficult to capture the lasting impact of a Kirkham Grammar School education without looking at where our pupils go next, what they achieve and who they are becoming.

Today we are celebrating Natasha, who recently graduated from the University of York with a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, achieving First Class Honours.

Alongside her studies, Natasha served as Treasurer of the University of York Hockey Club, an experience which played an important part in her university life.

In September, Natasha will continue her academic journey at University College London (UCL), beginning an MSc in Security Studies at the UCL Political Science and School of Public Policy.

Our Head of Sport, Mrs Osborne, coached and mentored Natasha during her time at KGS and said:

“Natasha is a caring and compassionate sportswoman who represented the school with great commitment and enthusiasm. As Vice Captain of the 1st XI hockey squad, she was a supportive and thoughtful leader who always looked out for her teammates and encouraged those around her. Her kindness, team spirit and dedication made her a highly valued member of the squad. I'm not surprised to see that she's flourishing.”

Congratulations, Natasha - from everyone at KGS 💙

✨Exciting News for September✨

Kirkham Grammar School is going mobile-phone free.

Yesterday, we took delivery of our brand-new lockable phone pouches and lockboxes.

From September, every pupil in First to Fifth Year will pop their phone into their own secure pouch at the start of the day - keeping it safe, out of sight and out of mind until the final bell.

Why are we doing this? Because we care about pupil wellbeing, mental health and learning.

A phone-free classroom means:

✔️Fewer distractions, more focus
✔️Stronger face-to-face friendships
✔️A calmer, happier school day
✔️Better concentration and results

Watch this space for more details! 💙

✨A memorable moment captured for Philippa H and her father✨

Yesterday, Philippa celebrated an outstanding set of GCSE results - ten Grade 9s and one Grade 8 across 11 GCSEs.

Whilst her academic success is truly remarkable, Philippa’s achievements extend far beyond the classroom. During her time at Kirkham Grammar School, she has been (amongst other things!):

💙A goalkeeper for multiple school hockey teams and the England Hockey Talent Academy
💙A Corporal NCO in the school’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF)
💙The recipient of an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship - one of the UK’s most prestigious awards for aspiring young engineers.

Awarded through a highly competitive examination and interview process, the scholarship recognises students with exceptional potential to become future leaders in engineering and technical design.

Philippa’s journey is a brilliant example of ambition, leadership and determination. She truly makes the most of every opportunity and we are incredibly proud of everything she has achieved at KGS.

Congratulations, Philippa - you most certainly have an exciting future ahead.

We are so proud to celebrate an incredible group of young people today - and an exceptional set of GCSE results at Kirkham Grammar School.

Our pupils achieved a remarkable 91% overall pass rate, and over one third of the grades awarded were 9-7.

These results are a fantastic reflection of the hard work, ambition and determination of our pupils, alongside the dedication of our teachers and the support of families. We are especially proud of the resilience and commitment our pupils have shown throughout their GCSE journey - qualities that will stay with them long after results day.

It was wonderful to see so many beaming smiles, so many hugs and well wishes, and so many friends reconnecting.

A huge congratulations to the Class of 2026 - enjoy this moment, celebrate together and go forward with confidence.

We are so proud of you and look forward to welcoming many of you back to Sixth Form in September! 💙
