Does helping your child learn their times tables feel like another chore?

Watch the game below for a fun way to practise together.

Why and how can you help your child learn their times tables?

In recent years, children have been expected to recall all their times tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4, in preparation for the statutory Multiplication Tables Check. During the check, they have just six seconds to answer each question.

While speed matters, true success begins much earlier — with understanding.

Before children can confidently recall multiplication facts, they need meaningful, hands-on experiences of multiplication and division. In the early years this might look like pairing socks while counting in twos, sharing snacks equally, or counting coins in 2p, 5p or 10p groups.

These everyday moments build the foundations of mathematical thinking. Children begin to see that “four lots of five equals twenty” and understand that multiplication represents equal groups.

Exploring patterns through skip counting, number lines (even chalked onto the pavement), and noticing links between tables such as the 3s, 6s and 9s strengthens understanding further.

Learning that multiplication is commutative — that 3 × 4 is the same as 4 × 3 — reduces the number of facts children need to memorise and builds confidence. Understanding division as sharing or grouping helps children connect facts logically rather than relying on rote memorisation alone.

For example, sharing 20 sweets between 4 people, or grouping 20 sweets into groups of 5, helps children see the relationship between multiplication and division.

Research by Jo Boaler (2015), analysing the performance of 13 million students in international PISA assessments, found that the highest achievers used connected understanding, while lower attainers relied mainly on memorisation.

With secure knowledge of times tables and their related division facts, children are far better prepared for the mathematical demands of Years 5 and 6, including fractions, percentages, long multiplication and division.

Exciting news — I’m now offering in-person GCSE and KS3 English tuition!

With a BA (Hons) in English Language and a PGCE, I bring strong subject knowledge, extensive classroom experience, and a genuine passion for English. I spent many years writing English unit plans for The Write Stuff, the nationally recognised curriculum developed by Jane Considine, which has shaped my structured and engaging approach to teaching.

I am truly passionate about helping students develop both their reading and writing skills — building confidence, strengthening analysis, and enabling them to express themselves clearly and successfully in exams and beyond. My sessions are supportive, personalised, and designed to help every learner feel capable and empowered.

Please feel free to message me for availability or further information.
