This summer, more than 100 boys from schools across Lancashire and Cumbria explored careers in nursing, social work and other caring professions through three Men Do Care events. π
The impact was clear: afterwards, 63% of attendees said caring professions are exciting and rewarding - almost double the proportion before the events.
Olly, a pupil from Blackburn Central High School, said: "I think men should be able to go into (caring) roles and there shouldn't be stereotypes."
Hector, a pupil from Lathom High School in Skelmersdale, said: "The university visit has helped me understand that caring jobs can be for everyone. It's not... your gender that determines the job."
Oliver, a pupil from St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Carlisle, said: "It's shown you can be what you want to be and do what job you want to do if you set your mind to it."
Delivered by our Widening Participation team, these events are part of our Men Do Care campaign, which challenges stereotypes, encourages more men to consider rewarding careers in care, and helps build a workforce that better reflects the communities it serves.
A huge thank you to Blackburn Central High School (Blackburn Central High School), Lathom High School (Lathom High School), Balshaw's Church of England High School and St John Henry Newman Catholic School for taking part. π
"This placement has opened my eyes to how diverse Occupational Therapy is." πΏ
Jenny reflects on her role-emerging placement at Pennine Lancashire Community Farm, where she supported volunteers and improved accessibility.
Role-emerging placements take place in non-traditional settings without an occupational therapist on site, giving students the chance to apply their skills in new environments.
They're just one of the placement opportunities available to our Occupational Therapy students.
