ST WILFRID’S NURSERY – WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Week ending Friday 5th June 2026
Our book of the week has been “Starting School” This lovely book follows a number of children as they progress through a school year. We use this book as it helps the children who may be nervous about starting school in September.
Next terms books will be:
Augustus finds his smile (my personal favourite!)
People Who Help Us – Teacher
The Lion Inside
No!
Let’s Get Ready for School!
As you may have seen on the school newsletter, Mrs Monks leaves the nursery at the end of term to start a new post in school from September. Miss Heidi Meek will be replacing Mrs Monks, starting in September, working Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Lost Property: We have a navy blue age 3-4 zip up hoodie, M&S, that hasn’t been claimed.
Water Safety Code: Following on from the tragic news last week of the children who lost their lives in drowning incidents, I would like to let parents know that we do talk about water safety in Nursery. Parents of swimmers will know that the children learn the water safety code at their swimming lessons, and we do bring this learning into the nursery for all the children. A copy of the Water Safety Code poster is on the nursery door and also on our page.
June bills have now been sent out. Please could you ensure that May bills have been paid, as the deadline of 31 May has now passed. July bills will also be sent out early and payment date will be earlier, so that we have time for the books to be sent to the Accountant in time for the end of the academic year.
This week we celebrate three nursery superstars:
Maddox M and Ziggy C for lovely manners and using their “please” and “thank yous” without prompting;
Jack C for fantastic personal care skills, well done Jack!
Dates for diary:
Monday 8th June – 5.30pm to 6.30pm – (Next Monday) an introductory parents meeting in the school hall for our pre-school parents of children who will be attending St Wilfrid’s from September 2026.
Sports Day has been re-arranged for Wednesday 1st July 2026 at 1pm prompt – fingers crossed for good weather!
Field Day: Saturday 13th June – Nursery will be taking part and the theme is “100 years of David Attenborough” and a celebration of our Earth’s Fauna and Flora; children can dress up as their favourite animals or plants or as part of the Nursery section - the “Australian Outback.” Staff will look after the nursery children on the wagon. If you would like to take part please let us know and it gives us an idea of who to expect on the day. Suggestions for costumes include explorers, crocodiles, bearded dragons, koalas, anteaters, dingoes, emus, spiders, horses, snakes, wombats, lizards, camels, parrots, budgies and kangaroos. (We do have a camel costume from our Nativity costumes set if anyone would like to borrow it. First come first served.) We will meet between 11.30am/11.45am at the car park, Civic Hall, Willows Park Lane, in time to get onto the wagon and for judging at 12 noon. Please ensure that your child has been to the toilet before getting onto the wagon - and if the weather is very warm, the children can bring drinks. The parade will begin at 12.30pm. We will return to the car park for approximately 1pm/1.15pm. Please pick up your child promptly, in fairness to the staff who also wish to enjoy the day.
There will be a free float themed disco on Monday 15th June in the School Hall from 5.30pm to 7pm for all children who take an active part in Field Day (whether via Nursery/School, dancing or teams). Nursery children are most welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult.
Tuesday 16th June and Friday 19th June – as part of their leaving celebrations, we will be holding a pre-school trip for a picnic to Ribchester Park. We will take the children in the morning, in two groups for a picnic and ice cream, and a play on the park! ST WILFRID’S NURSERY – WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Week ending Friday 15th May 2026
Our book of the week has been “Nuddy Ned” Ned is running riot in the nuddy – can anyone convince Ned to put his clothes back on? This funny book has great rhyming text for our older children to spot, and strategically placed card to protect Ned’s modesty. Next week we join The Colour Monster as he goes to School, and we will be looking at knowing the names of colours in conjunction with the book.
Suncream: When UV levels reach level three and above, we apply suncream to the children at least half an hour before outdoor play and hats are worn when playing outside. We have a suncream in Nursery which is suitable for sensitive skin, and is the same as the one used by school. Parents are quite welcome to bring their own suncream for their child if they so wish. If parents could apply suncream before children come into nursery this would assist us greatly. I would also like to echo Mr McHugh’s wishes, and ask that a coat is still brought into Nursery, as there is still a cold wind at times. Thank you.
Lost property: We have a lovely Mountain Warehouse bright blue coat, age 5-6 years, which has never been claimed. Please let us know if it is yours!
Characteristics of Effective Learning: describe behaviours children use in order to learn and are split into three categories: playing and exploring – engagement, active learning – motivation, and creating and thinking critically – thinking. Each week we celebrate the children who have shown these particular characteristics.
Thinking Tiger: Tilly M for an excellent show and tell presentation, telling us all about her trip to London;
Engaging Elephant: Arthur H for a super morning’s work – painting a super flower picture for Longridge Show, showing kindness to his friends and excellent tidying up;
Motivational Monkey: Zayaan M for helping to sweep up the soil around our “garden tuff tray.”
Well done to these children!

ST WILFRID’S NURSERY – WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Week ending Friday 8th May 2026
Our book of the week has been “The Dinky Donkey” Everyone loves this tale of the “stinky p***y plinky-plonky winky-tinky pinky funky blinky dinky donkey!”
Books for the next two weeks are:
Nuddy Ned
The Colour Monster starts School
Suncream: When UV levels reach level 3 and above, we apply suncream to the children at least half an hour before outdoor play and hats are worn when playing outside. Thank you.
Our big project this term has been our gardening/planting area at the back of nursery. Miss Pickard is leading this project, ably helped by Mrs Parkinson and the nursery children. We have planted some parsnips, beetroot, potatoes, carrots, lemon cucumber, peppers and sweetcorn, and garlic in between to help keep aphids and other flower-eating bugs away. We hope to encourage lots of bees, butterflies and pollination. We hope to sample some of these foods at snack time.
Gardening is beneficial in the Early Years (and older!) for many reasons. Physical health is supported through watering, digging, moving soil, helps co-ordination, and supports overall health and fitness. The children learn maths/science through measuring, counting, size, problem solving, planning, planting, observation skills, ecological systems and growth. Gardening encourages teamwork, communication, and increasing vocabulary/learning new words. The connection to nature calms, stimulates senses, encourages curiosity and an understanding of where food comes from. We hope to encourage healthy eating habits and the willingness to try new foods. The children learn patience, resilience, hands on learning, satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment are as they care and watch plants grow and produce.
Dates for diary:
Sports Day: Wednesday 20th May from 1pm (weather dependant) Nursery will be holding their running races at 1pm prompt. If your child is not normally in on Wednesdays, you may meet us on the field (behind the Nursery) at 12.45pm, watch the races, and collect from Nursery afterwards. This last point is a safeguarding issue and your co-operation is greatly appreciated. Please note as we are full, we cannot book any children in for extra sessions on this day. We have practised our running races today, and we will continue to practice up until l the day. Please send your child in trainers or suitable running shoes, or pop them in your child’s bag on Sports Day. Crocs are great but are not fit for running a race!
Family Mass dates: Saturday 9 May – Saturday 6th June – Saturday 4th July – all at 5.30pm. All families would be most welcome!
This week we celebrate some excellent athletes!
Elsie H for riding her bike without stabilisers and achieving her 20 metres swimming award;
Grace G for instigating and accompanying her Mum on a run;
Avalyn M for a skilful swim today and for being able to recite the pool rules.
Very well done to all these children for their great physical efforts.
Do not forget our “chat, play, read” packs/books are still available to borrow.

ST WILFRID’S NURSERY – WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Week ending Friday 1st May 2026
Our book of the week has been “ Would you like a Banana?” a lovely book about a gorilla who does not want to eat different foods. A great book for encouraging children to try new foods.
Future books of the week

If parents could apply suncream before children come into nursery this would assist us greatly. Thank you.
Could I give all families a gentle reminder that the nursery will not administer Calpol or other paracetamol like medications? This is because the medicines have the potential to mask a fever, which could hide a more serious illness. If your child is poorly or in pain and they require pain relief, they should be kept at home until they feel better.
As some of you will be aware, we now have a planting/gardening section at the back of the nursery building. The children have been busy digging, planting and watering this week. We will be growing vegetables and flowers over the coming weeks. Hopefully you will see some of the results on Sports Day!

A very warm welcome back to you all, we hope you have all had a fantastic Easter break.
Our book of the week has been “Monkey Puzzle” by the dream team of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, which unbelievably is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
