⚡ Learning really does happen everywhere at Farming Friends! 🌱

Today’s practical learning involved putting up electric fencing — but there was much more going on than simply fencing a field.

We explored how an electric circuit works, why the fence needs to form a complete circuit and what happens when something causes it to short out. The young people were able to see first-hand how grass, branches or the fence touching something it shouldn’t can affect the flow of electricity — then work together to find and solve the problem.

And, of course, there was plenty of teamwork involved too! 💪

Measuring, carrying equipment, positioning posts, running the tape, problem-solving and communicating with each other all formed part of the task.

This is exactly what learning at Farming Friends is about — taking subjects such as science, maths and problem-solving out of a textbook and giving them a real purpose in everyday farm life.

🌱 Heavy work, happy minds 💚

What might look like simply pulling a gate up a field is actually providing something really valuable for many of the young people we support.

In SEND, activities involving pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying are often referred to as “heavy work.” They provide proprioceptive input — feedback through the muscles and joints that helps the brain understand where the body is and what it’s doing.

For children and young people with sensory processing differences, including many autistic and ADHD learners, this type of purposeful physical activity can be particularly regulating. Working against resistance can have a grounding and organising effect, helping some young people feel calmer when overwhelmed or anxious, while helping others become more alert and ready to engage.

And the best bit? It doesn’t have to feel like therapy.

Here, it’s simply two young people with a job to do, working together, using their bodies, solving a problem and contributing to life on the farm.

That’s what Farming Friends is about — learning, regulation and confidence developing naturally through real, purposeful experiences. 🌾🐴💚

Just look at them… absolutely exhausted, sleepy and completely content. ❤️🐐

Honestly, they’re just like children. They shouted for breakfast, demanded to go out, then ran round and round and round like complete lunatics…

…and then suddenly…

Zzzzzzz. 😴

Apparently being a goat is exhausting work. 😂

Nothing makes me happier than seeing them this settled and content. 🥰
