It is too easy to compare other babies to your own baby, and wonder what you’re doing wrong. But when it comes to your baby’s sleep, there is no ‘normal’.

Most babies wake often during the night in their first few months and throughout the first year. In fact, around a third of babies will have never slept all night by 12 months.

But this doesn’t make the reality of living with sleep deprivation any easier. Even though you were probably expecting some sleepless nights, the reality might be harder than you imagined.

Hot day car seat check ☀️

Before you strap your baby or child in, touch the buckle, straps and seat fabric with your hand.

If it feels too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their skin.

What to do:
Air the car.
Cool the seat.
Wait before clipping them in.

To help stop it happening next time:
Park in shade where you can.
Use a windscreen shade.
Cover the empty car seat with a light towel or muslin when you leave the car.

Tiny check. Big difference.

What’s your best hot-weather car trick for little ones?

☀️🌡️ Warm weather making your little one fussy?

When babies get too hot, they can become uncomfortable, unsettled and harder to soothe, which may lead to more crying. As temperatures rise, it’s a good time to remember the ICON message:

I – Infant crying is normal, and it will stop.
Crying often increases from around two weeks of age, peaks between six and eight weeks, and then gradually decreases.

C – Comfort methods can help.
Try rocking, gentle touch, cuddles, or soothing sounds.

O – It’s okay to walk away briefly if the crying becomes overwhelming.
Just make sure your baby is safe first.

N – Never, ever shake or hurt a baby.

Top tips to keep your baby cool and comfortable:

👕 Dress them in light, loose-fitting clothing
🏠 Keep rooms cool by closing curtains or blinds during the day
🌀 Use a fan to circulate air, but don’t point it directly at your baby
🍼 Offer feeds more frequently to help keep them hydrated
🚗 Never leave a baby alone in a parked car – even for a moment

⚠️ If your baby seems unusually sleepy, irritable, or has fewer wet nappies than normal, they may be dehydrated. Consider seeking medical advice.

💙 Stay cool, stay safe, and remember:

Babies cry. You can cope.
