MEET DAVE! Our fabulous Music Tech Guru!
Dave runs the BeatLab sessions at Preston Music Centre, where young musicians learn how to create and perform original music with Ableton Move groove-boxes. He has been working for LMS for about 20 years and, as well as teaching bass and guitar and running jazz & rock band workshops, he is the lead practitioner working with students on electronic music. He has also been a key driving force in the development of this in Lancashire.
As a firm believer in practicing what you teach, Dave also has his own distinctive artist practice, creating and performing regularly as Guerrilla Biscuits. He harnesses a laptop running Ableton Live software and controlled by many MIDI controllers to curate improvised immersive sonic journeys packed full of glitchy beats, sweet hooks & filthy grooves all mixed and mashed in real time.
Drawing on his deep love of jazz and improvised music, Dave incorporates chance and probability into his live performances to create unpredictable situations that require in-the-moment responses, producing new and hopefully surprising results with each performance.
Having come up through many DIY music scenes, Dave is a passionate educator who believes strongly in harnessing the knowledge and interests of young musicians to create non-hierarchical learning environments where every intentional choice that can be explained is valid. Students are encouraged to collaborate with each other and to play and perform in groups. They are facilitated to take control of their own learning by experimenting and doing and, most importantly, sharing the results with each other.

NCO’s aim is to make sure money doesn’t create a barrier to a child hoping to take part in their activities. They want any young musician, no matter their background or circumstance, to have the opportunity to accept their offer of a place in NCO.
It is also possible to have all or part of the fees paid for by our Financial Support programme.
If you have any questions about the process or sharing this information, please email [email protected] with any questions you may have.
Play together. Be unstoppable.
