Is the DSA paid in one lump sum?

No, the DSA award is usually a package of recommended support rather than one single cash amount. The package may include equipment, software, assistive technology training, specialist mentoring or travel support.

The APC is a requirement for all dyslexia assessors, demonstrating professional competence in the assessment of dyslexia.

Dyslexia is recognised as a learning difficulty and if you're off to University, there is help available in the DSA.

Applying for the DSA takes up to 16 weeks, but Undergraduate and postgraduate students can get up to £27,783 for support for the 2026/27 academic year.

To apply for a Disabled Student’s Allowance (DSA), dyslexic individuals will need to provide evidence of their assessment by a qualified, specialist assessor.

Michala, founder of Dyslexia First, has qualified for her Assessment Practicing Certificate (APC). Every three years, Michala renews her APC to demonstrate her professional competence in the assessment of specific learning difficulties or dyslexia.

What’s important is making sure your assessor is up to date with their APC, as without this, a DSA application can be delayed, or rejected. All APC holders are listed on the SASC list of assessors (https://www.sasc.org.uk/find-an-assessor/).
