Some good Nike color combinations on some good (great) knitted fabrics.

Add a few gradients and some big fluor color accents, and that's enough to keep us inspired for today.

Tomorrow I’ll share more about how to highlight the USPs of your products so the end user intuitively understands their real value.

The easiest way to make your clients happy? Make what’s special about their product impossible to miss.

Whether it’s a special technology they developed, a usability feature, or simply a button that needs to feel intuitive, color accents are often used randomly, when they’re actually one of the easiest and most effective ways to communicate and sell the innovation you designed.

The user must say “Oh wow, this product has this feature, that’s awesome.”
Your clients must think: “Good, they clearly understood how to make our product’s value obvious to our users.”

Simple example here with the N°65. Instead of hiding their innovative front / rear racks, they put them forward as part of the design.

As the designer you must think: “Look, this is not just a bike > I want you to understand why this product is different from others and what benefits you can get from it.”

If the user has to look closely, read a manual, or have someone explain why the product is different, then part of the design opportunity has been missed.

Some designers (especially young ones) often think the job is to have good ideas.
In reality, the job is about making those ideas desirable, understandable, and easy to believe in.

What I find particularly interesting in the first image is the intent behind the hood surfacing.

Historically, BMW’s identity / brand signature at the front is made by the two kidneys, sort of sticked to the front in 2D.

But in their latest concepts and models, the hood starts to become part of that identity too.

Clearly reinforced by this (amazing) surface treatments you see on the hood, which connects directly with the two kidneys.

It basically extends the famous 2D kidneys into three dimensions and starts to structure the whole front as one branded element, rather than just having the two kidneys stuck onto the front.

Before, you had the two 2d kidneys. Now, the entire front of the car is shaped in 3d around them. It massively strengthens the brand identity.

--For those who haven’t noticed that the Citroën Ami is actually symmetrical...

So Citroën had to make it cheap, so they decided to go all in on smart manufacturing. A constraint which became the key features of the design.

The clearest examples:

1 - The front and rear bumpers are identical, so the front and back of the car are basically the same. Citroën then relies on lighting colors, yellow at the front and red at the back, to create the distinction.

2 - The left and right doors are actually the same part. But this is where it gets funny (but really cool): the driver’s door is rear hinged while the passenger door is front hinged. So even though they’re identical parts, they open in opposite directions.

And if you see it in person, I was in France for the last two months, it actually feels super cool. You’re almost proud of opening the passenger door the “wrong” way.

> Fewer unique parts
> fewer molds
> less tooling
> fewer references to manage
> simpler logistics
> simpler assembly process.

3 - Another important decision I like, is the body material. Instead of using the usual metal panels with several stages of painting, the Ami uses plastic exterior panels with the color integrated directly into the material.

> Removes a lot of complexity from production, �> Gives the car its raw, utilitarian surface quality
> Less pollution from spray painting.

In the end, none of those constraints feel like compromises but all become part of the character of the car. Young people in France are driving it everywhere, and it has become a cool vehicle to get around in.

Bravo Citroën.

Young designers often think the job is to come up with good ideas. I’ve started writing a book about this kind of thinking: the things design school rarely teaches you about making ideas desirable, understandable, and easy to believe in.

The Manivelle N°65 Quentin by

What I really like here is the way practicality becomes the identity of the bike.

The front and rear racks are obviously there to carry things, but instead of trying to make them disappear, they are really put forward as part of the design > oranged!

When a product has something innovative or different, that difference needs to be visible. From ten meters away, you should already understand that this is not just another bike. There is something special happening.

By keeping the frame white and making the functional additions bright orange, the innovation is immediately highlighted. You see the racks first, you understand that they are important, and then you naturally start reading how they work and how they connect to the bike.

That’s an important part of design: not only creating a new function, but also making that function easy to see and easy to understand.

If the user has to look closely, read a description, or have someone explain why the product is different, then part of the design opportunity has been missed.

Good design is also about communication. The function has to work, of course, but ideally the product should communicate what makes it unique almost intuitively.

Two chairs: ’s Puppy and ’s Julian

What I find interesting here is how much the shape seems to come from the manufacturing process.

This looks like a rotomoulded part rather than injection moulding. The piece is hollow and made as one large continuous volume, which is typical of rotomoulding and works really well for this kind of furniture or toy.

You can also see how the geometry has been designed around demoulding. The legs go in very different directions, but the surfaces remain quite open (without too many shapes folding back into themselves). You still need draft and enough clearance to get a large part like this out of the mould.

Rotomoulding is interesting because it allows these big, soft, almost inflated-looking forms to be produced as a single plastic part. The tooling can actually be simpler than injection moulding, but the process itself is much slower, so it tends to make more sense for relatively large parts and lower production volumes.

In this case, the manufacturing process is what gives the object its character.

Very interesting, almost iconic, phone.

The modular concept is interesting, but what I like most is the use of the square.

Simple shapes that we immediately recognize > square, circle, triangle, cross > tend to feel much more iconic and timeless than a rectangle with slightly random proportions. They are easier to remember, and they give a product a much stronger identity.

So the idea of making a phone out of two squares is actually quite fun. It gives the product a very recognizable silhouette.

There is a lot you could do with CMF here. Different colors for each square, tone-on-tone combinations, contrasting materials… The modularity could create a lot of interesting combinations between color and material without changing the basic design.

The concept itself by , is pretty basic, but the surface treatment is really nice.

There are a lot of small details worth looking at: Around the flash, for example, the opening is softened with a chamfer instead of just being cut straight into the body. The shutter button is even more detailed: the button itself has a small raised bump, it sits within a flat area, and that whole area is then slightly recessed into the main surface. The side buttons use the same kind of thinking, with large chamfers around them that make the transitions feel much softer and more resolved.

Also, these chamfers and details are exactly the kind of details that make a big difference when doing 3D.

A model can have the right overall shape, but if every edge is sharp, it still won’t feel realistic. On a real product, plastic edges might have something like a 0.2 mm radius. Rubber might be closer to 0.5 mm. The gap around a moving button might be 0.5 mm because it needs clearance, while the gap between two fixed plastic parts can be much tighter.

It’s all these tiny details, added together, that create this feeling of quality and realism (not just how good you are with lighting in keyshot).

So there are really two things to look at here: the quality of the surfaces from a design point of view, and the quality of the 3D model itself, which is almost at engineering level (f it isn’t actually the engineering CAD being rendered).
