I have been a maths tutor for over two years now, and I thought it'd be fun to share some of the little maths mix-ups I come across all the time.

Whether I have a student aiming for the top grades or a student just hoping to pass, it doesn't matter – these little mistakes are so common that I encounter them constantly! 🧡

It's wild to think that, until the 5th century, we didn’t have the number zero! It was an Indian mathematician called Aryabhata who established zero as a digit in itself rather than merely a placeholder.

Then, in the 7th century, another Indian mathematician called Brahmagupta developed methods for calculating using zero that we still use to this day.

Previous number systems, like roman numerals, lacked a symbol for ‘nothing’, so while these systems were good for everyday maths (such as building things, timekeeping, and accounting), they weren’t so good for more advanced stuff.

For example, it was Brahmagupta's conception of zero that helped him formalise the use of negative numbers, which was a pretty important breakthrough in the history of mathematics.

Prior to Brahmagupta, ancient Greek mathematics was rooted in geometry, where all geometrical diagrams represented positive quantities, so negative numbers weren't really a concern for the Greeks. Meanwhile, ancient Chinese mathematicians made significant advancements by using coloured rods to represent positive and negative numbers, but it was Indian mathematicians who later came up with the clear, systematic rules for working with them.

☆ Interestingly, in 1758, British mathematician Francis Maseres argued that negative numbers did not exist, stating: '[Negative numbers] make dark of the things which are in their nature excessively obvious and simple.' ☆

A past paper question on perpendicular lines 😊

This is a question that appeared on AQA's GCSE Mathematics Summer 2022 exam series. More specifically, it appeared on the Higher Tier Paper 2 and was question number 24.

I like this question because it tests students on their ability to find the gradient of a line from a set of coordinates that the line passes through, find the gradient of a perpendicular line, and find a corresponding x- or y-coordinate when given the other! 📈

As part of my notes for this question, I included indicators of where students would be picking up their method and accuracy marks ✅

Now that we're pretty close to the exams, for the past couple of weeks I have been doing lots of past paper questions with my students. It's a great way to revise a wide range of topics, pick up some practical strategies, and realise what you need more practice on!

Honestly, looking back, the months between January and July 2018 were some of the hardest in my life.

Studying for 11 different qualifications is difficult.

I was always a 'conscientious' student – this is the actual word used by my teachers at parents' evenings throughout secondary school. I am lucky to be very self-motivated: I completed my homework and revised for my exams with no need for persuasion or coaxing from my parents.

However, that's not to say I breezed through my GCSEs. There were many nightmares, many nights that I woke up and puked my guts out due to the stress, and many days where I got little revision done because I was just so anxious.

GCSEs are challenging, and each student experiences them differently, so here are some ideas about how you can help your Year 11 student.

The Easter holidays are nearly here, which is crucial time for students sitting their GCSEs in May/June to put their head down and study their heart out. For this reason, I wanted to reupload my 'How to revise' post.

I want to express very clearly that everyone learns in slightly different ways, so there is no one set method that will work for every single student. However, the general process that I've set out in this post is definitely a good place to start.

The most important thing is, whatever you do to revise, make sure it's active. Don't simply watch YouTube videos and read through revision guides. Test yourself. Trust me. It can be hard to bring yourself to complete past papers and practice questions if you're worried about getting things wrong, but it's better to get things wrong while you're revising than to get things wrong in the actual exam because you didn't practise! ✏

One great way of getting some effective maths revision in is by booking onto a few of my small group sessions. These are hour-long workshops for multiple students to attend at once, during which we will complete a bunch of past paper questions together, focussing on problem solving and exam technique.

I wanted to show everyone my lovely planner that keeps me (just about) on top of things during busy weeks. Isn't it pretty?! I received it as a gift at Christmas but I've only recently come to the end of my previous planner (swipe to see this), so it wasn't cracked open and written in until a couple of weeks ago!

I also wanted to remind everyone that I am running several small group sessions over the Easter holidays. I posted about these sessions last week, so go check out that post for more information! 🎉Online GCSE mathematics lessons for only £10!🎉

1:1 sessions are continuing as usual, but with exams around the corner, some students may need more support, so I am offering an affordable way to get extra practice and exam prep in. Over the Easter holidays (during the weeks commencing 30th March and 6th April) I am running several small group sessions, priced at just £10 per hour.

➼ Five sessions per week will focus on grade 4/5 foundation-tier content. Higher-tier students are welcome to join since this material is also part of their syllabus.
➼ Two sessions per week will cover content exclusive to the higher-tier exams.

I want these sessions to be as valuable as possible for everyone. Instead of covering content that some may already be familiar with, we will focus on working through past paper questions across a range of topics. Each session will be completely unique and packed with useful information and practical strategies to help students feel more confident and prepared for their GCSE mathematics exams.

The sessions will encourage active participation, with plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions, solve problems, and collaborate with others. Students will be encouraged to engage with the content, but no one will ever be singled out. Those who may feel shy or experience social anxiety can engage in their own way without any pressure to speak out, socialise, or even turn their camera on.
