Potters Bar Community Music School

Potters Bar Community Music School Saturday morning music school in Potters Bar based at Mount Grace School. We give termly concerts in the main Hall of the school which are open to the public.

Potters Bar Community Music School (PBCMS) is based at Mount Grace school on Saturday mornings, 8:30 to 11:30 in term time. PBCMS staff are local, experienced teachers and performers who are fully qualified and DBS checked. Instrumental staff were typically trained at the main London conservertoires (such as The Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, etc.) and perform with professional or

chestras and choirs. Our senior staff have taught pupils right from their first lessons, past grade 8 right up to entering Music College or University.

Young Pianist opportunity🎹.
SuperStrings, our junior level string orchestra, is looking for a young pianist. This is a great opportunity for any student to learn to count, to follow a conductor and enjoy social music making. The ideal student might be aged 8-13 and grade 3-5, but any age is fine. The orchestra generally is for beginners to grade 3, but an orchestral pianist needs to be slightly more advanced for this role. We rehearse from 9-9:40 on Saturdays.
If your child is interested send us a message to [email protected].
Here we are in action.

Next up is a clip of our young players who attended our viola course in the summer term. These students had 20 minutes a week for just one term to learn alto clef; quite a stretch of the brain for these amazing young players! Here they are playing "Viva Violas" with Amber Strings. https://youtu.be/hvUmlLDfsao?is=rDbs_og3JXBJNmAZ

Good luck for GCSE and A level results for all our students this summer. Remember, musicians are amazing whatever the outcome and what you have created together, even though it's fleeting, can never be taken from you. 🎺🎻🎶🎈

Wonderful to see the promotion of children's music at our library (but violinists, don't copy that bow hold! 😂).

Meet Ezra – one of our Summer Reading Challenge: Read to the Beat characters! 🎶

Ezra loves both orchestral music and poetry. He likes how different elements come together, which also shows in his love of making food with his friends.

We’ve chosen three books we think Ezra would borrow at the library. You can reserve these books and more on the Hertfordshire Libraries catalogue.

We hope everyone is having an amazing summer break! A reminder, that often the best learning is done out of school for fun! Do take the chance to listen to the kind of music we all love to play together on Saturdays. There are lots of summer classical music festivals and courses, not to mention the Albert Hall Proms of course!
Here is a clip of our students Vivaldi's Summer to get you in the mood.

Our youngest string players tell the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. Superstrings is for beginners up to grade 3. This great little piece works on so many of the basic string techniques ( string crossings, pizzicato, spiccato, tremulo, harmonics, left hand slides...) which are the building blocks of good string playing. Our narrator is a parent helper who is in our adult orchestra, too, Helen Jeckells . This piece was a huge task for our children to learn. Conductor is Diane Darwish
