Try this simple science experiment at home!

Fill a shallow bowl with water and sprinkle ground black pepper across the surface. Next, add a small drop of washing-up liquid to your finger and gently touch the surface.

Watch as the pepper instantly moves away from the soap.

The pepper represents germs, and the soap breaks the surface tension of the water, pushing the ‘germs’ away. This simple experiment helps us understand why washing our hands with soap is so effective.

Activities like this encourage curiosity, observation and scientific thinking, all key skills we nurture at First Class Learning.

This week we celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Lunar New Year marks the start of a fresh chapter and is celebrated in many Asian cultures around the world. It is a time associated with new beginnings, reflection and good fortune, making it a perfect moment to set new learning goals and positive habits.

Trying something new, whether it’s learning about traditions, reading a story from another culture or setting a small academic goal, helps children develop curiosity and a love of learning.

At First Class Learning, we encourage students to see every new term as a chance to grow in confidence and ability. This Lunar New Year, let’s celebrate fresh opportunities and the excitement of learning something new.

Practising maths using real world scenarios is a great way to boost classroom skills.

Give your child a shopping maths challenge: “You have £10. You buy 3 items costing £2.75, £1.60 and £3.50. How much change do you get?”

Parents’ evening is a valuable opportunity to check in on your child’s progress and celebrate how far they’ve come. It’s a great time to ask about strengths, areas for improvement, and how your child is engaging in class.

After the meeting, talking through feedback calmly and positively can help your child feel supported and motivated.

At First Class Learning, we work with families to support classroom learning and reinforce key skills at home, helping children feel prepared, confident and ready to progress.

FCL February 02 - Charles Dickens’ Birthday

Saturday 7th February marked the birthday of Charles Dickens, one of Britain’s most famous and influential authors. His stories, including Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations, are still read and loved by students today.

✨ Fun fact: Dickens originally published many of his novels in weekly or monthly parts, meaning readers had to wait for the next chapter, just like a 19th-century version of a TV series! This helped build suspense and excitement around his stories.

At First Class Learning, we encourage students to explore classic literature alongside modern texts to build confidence and a lifelong love of reading.
