Libraries typically hold more surprises than you might expect. Take for example this gloriously lavish book of animal portraits, open at our favourite - "Sheep with a pearl earing". Take a look and tell us yours. This particular book is tucked away in the Outside In World collection, between the Library café and vending machines.

Send us a photo of any weird and wonderful works you find on your library travels!

A great couple of weeks here in Portsmouth, congratulations to all our wonderful graduates! It’s been a pleasure to support you in your learning journeys from freshers to flourishing graduates. We hope you think back on your time in the University Library fondly.

If you are staying around after graduation, why not join the University Library as an external member? It’s free, lets you into the building whenever we are open to use our guest wifi, and even lets you borrow a few books. What’s not to like? 🙂

Chat with a librarian online about joining the Library or head on over to the External Membership page on the Library website for details.

Discover the history of the Deaf community and how rhetoric and the oppression of diversity for the convenience of the majority for centuries won out over scientific reason and condemned Deaf people to the fringes of society, disenfranchised and disabled, until their longstanding resistance won out and both Deaf identity and manual sign language became recognised

This latest exhibition from Dr Annabel Tremlett, Associate Professor in Social Inclusion at the University of Portsmouth, in collaboration with local author, artist, and community leader Amanda Garrie explores connections with and between people with Gypsy, Roma, Traveller, Showpeople and Boatpeople (‘GRTSB’) heritages.

These are all such different groups with different traditions, languages and cultural practices in countries across Europe. But they are still connected through histories of travelling and nomadism, strong affiliations to kin and community, with deep traditions in crafts, music, trading, toolmaking, and entertainment.

Connections runs throughout July and August at the University of Portsmouth Library. This exhibition of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller art, crafts and culture conveys the profound sense of familial and cultural heritage and survival despite frequent stigma, racism and discrimination.

Art and Architecture Complete is changing its name to Art Complete from 1 August.

Nothing else will change - the look and feel, search tools, content and everything else you have come to know and love remains the same, they are just shortening the name to make it more snappy and trendy.
