I’m delighted to have been quoted in the latest edition of Intuition Magazine in the article “The Quest for Improvement”, exploring self-assessment, quality improvement, and organisational culture within Further Education.
The article highlights something I feel strongly about: quality improvement is not about compliance, paperwork, or preparing for inspection. It is about creating the conditions where teachers can thrive and, ultimately, where learners can succeed.
One of the points I shared was the importance of transparency and trust within colleges. When quality processes become overly judgemental, they can unintentionally stifle innovation and professional growth. In contrast, the colleges that achieve the greatest impact are often those that foster collaboration, encourage peer-to-peer learning, and empower staff to share and develop best practice.
Quality improvement works best when it is owned by everyone, not simply driven by senior leaders. When curriculum teams, support staff, middle leaders, and teachers are all engaged in reflecting on practice and improving the learner experience, quality becomes part of the culture rather than an event on the calendar.
Throughout my work with colleges across the country, I have seen a clear connection between investing in staff and improving learner outcomes. If we look after our teachers, create opportunities for professional dialogue, and build a culture of trust, we create the foundations for better teaching, stronger learner engagement, and improved achievement.
As the sector continues to adapt to changes in inspection, accountability, and funding, it is encouraging to see the conversation shifting towards meaningful quality improvement that genuinely benefits learners.
Because when quality works, learners win.
Thank you to Education Training Foundation Intuition Magazine, David Adams and Editor Dr Dan Williams for including my thoughts alongside perspectives from leaders across the sector.

Today I’m proud to relaunch something that brings together two worlds I care deeply about.
Forces Into Teaching or Training.
A new pathway designed to support Armed Forces personnel transitioning into careers in teaching, training, and assessing within the Further Education and Skills sector.
During my time as a Naval Officer, I have seen first-hand the extraordinary instructional capability within the Armed Forces. Service personnel train others, mentor teams, assess competence, and uphold professional standards every single day.
Yet when many leave the forces, they often don’t realise that these skills translate directly into careers in education.
Through Essential Teaching UK , we are relaunching Forces Into Teaching or Training to help bridge that gap.
The programme supports Armed Forces leavers to gain recognised teaching and training qualifications including:
Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills)
Level 3 Award in Education and Training
Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
These qualifications open doors to careers in:
Further Education colleges
Apprenticeship training providers
Industry training roles
Workplace assessment
The education sector urgently needs professionals with real-world experience, leadership, and credibility. Armed Forces personnel already have these qualities. Now we simply need to translate them into recognised teaching practice.
For those leaving the forces, teaching is not a step away from service, it is simply a new way to continue it.
If you are an Armed Forces leaver, training provider, or college interested in supporting this pathway, I would love to connect.
Your next mission could be developing the next generation of skilled professionals.

📚 World Book Day feels even more special this year as it also happens to be Ann Gravells’ birthday.
For many of us working in Further Education and teacher training, Ann’s books have been a constant companion throughout our journey. Her work has supported thousands of teachers, trainers, and assessors to develop their practice and confidence in the classroom.
For me, it was a real privilege to take that journey one step further and co-author Achieving your Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills) with Ann. It’s an opportunity I will always hold dear, and one that continues to support trainee teachers across the sector.
On a day that celebrates the power of books and learning, it feels fitting to also celebrate someone who has contributed so much to both.
🎉 Happy Birthday Ann, and thank you for the impact you’ve had on so many educators.

I’m looking forward to speaking at the 2026 ETF Teaching and Learning Conference bringing together educators from across the FE and skills sector to connect, reflect and re-energise practice.
This conference is a must-attend because it is designed by educators, for educators, as a FE Consultant & Teacher Educator I am looking forward to connecting theory into practice.
By connecting the Shannon and Weaver Model, communication noise, troublesome knowledge, and threshold concepts, my session makes visible the hidden barriers behind learner disengagement and the familiar “blank look.” I hope to spark honest conversations about where our communication unintentionally obstructs learning.
The talk helps educators rethink practice by offering practical strategies to reduce noise, reframe difficult concepts, and design learning that supports conceptual breakthroughs rather than surface compliance.

Before 8am this morning, I was teaching in three different locations
And not one of them involved travel.
Using the power of our Live Virtual Classroom, I was able to work with learners in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – all in one morning, all in one classroom.
This work genuinely never gets boring. The reach, the flexibility, and the possibilities for high-quality teacher education and CPD are endless when geography is no longer a barrier.
If your college, training provider, or organisation is exploring:
live virtual delivery that still feels human
scalable teacher education and CPD
or new ways to support educators wherever they are
I’d love to have a conversation about how I can support you.
Sometimes the classroom has no walls and that’s where the real impact begins.
