That's day one of mock exams done and dusted, well done to all our Year 11s for a great start to the Mock Exam season and we wish you the best of luck through these next two weeks!

For the rest of us, it is vital that we support our Year 11s during this time, so let's make sure we do not enter rooms with an 'Examination in Progress' or 'No Entry' sign at the entrance, and we stay responsible and respectful when walking in the corridors to our destination, keeping as quiet as possible. 💙

From Monday 13th - Friday 17th November, we are raising awareness to all of our pupils of how we can work together to stamp out bullying.

We would like our pupils to wear odd socks to school on Monday 13th November to celebrate our differences. We will also have a focus on Anti-Bullying in our tutor sessions and assemblies to raise awareness of how we can work together to stop bullying at Mayfield and in our wider community. 💜

Are you responsible, respectful of others and want to make positive changes to the School and wider community? Then your School Council needs you!

Children in Years 1 to 6 have the opportunity to put themselves forward as a School Council member and represent their class and school. We are encouraging all children to put themselves forward for this regardless if they have been on the School Council before.

Children have been told that they will have until Wednesday 8th November to write and read their 'Mini Manifestos' to their class explaining why they wish to be a member. Once the class have voted in their representatives, we will reveal who has been elected on Friday 10th November.

We look forward to welcoming our new School Council members for 2023-2024!

Due to the significant wind and rain warnings for tomorrow, the fact that some public services have already been cancelled for tomorrow and the predictions that the wind will worsen during the day tomorrow, I have taken the decision not to open the school site tomorrow.

We will therefore be closed on Thursday 2 November 2023.

Did you know.. Ten whole days of school has been missed if a pupil has 95% attendance? That’s 50 lessons.

The Portsmouth City Council are restoring their campaign. Regular attendance at school is a key factor in opening up more opportunities in adult life. Good attendance helps children make good progress in school and fulfil their potential in life.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 #𝐁𝐞𝐞𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 💙

Developed in response to a growing concern for the wellbeing of young people in the UK, is a youth-centred programme and together with partners, they listen to the voices of young people to act together for positive change. The results, which will be available in early spring, will help us all act together on what young people are saying, to remove barriers to their wellbeing.

In their DR/Citizenship lessons, our Year 8 & 10 pupils will be completing a survey, with Year 8 pupils on Monday 6th November and Year 10 pupils on Wednesday 8th November.

𝙈𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙮! 👻

In anticipation of Halloween, our Senior Reading Ambassadors read spooky stories (but not too spooky) to our Year R children. Both sets of pupils enjoyed the fun occasion!

Our new Primary Reading Ambassadors of 2023-24 had their very first meeting this week and they are full of ideas for sharing the love of reading. Well done team!

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 🫀

On Monday, we had the privilege of welcoming Stephen Gooch, the Parademic Community Engagement Training Officer, from the South Central Ambulance Service to the school to teach us the vital steps to saving someone's life using CPR. A massive thank you to our STEM captains, Callum, Lily, and Lucy, for their amazing work in demonstrating, to the rest of our pupils, the process needed for effective resuscitation.

Throughout the rest of the day, our Year 8 students learned and revised not only the important instructions of CPR but also the importance of having a healthy heart.

Chadwick Aaron Boseman was an American actor, known for his portrayals of heroic and real-life individuals.

He was born in South Carolina in 1976 and graduated from Howard University and the British American Drama Academy. He started his career as a playwright and director and also appeared in several TV shows, such as Lincoln Heights and Persons Unknown. He rose to fame with his portrayal of baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the biopic 42 (2013), which earned him critical praise and recognition.

DRS ABCD – possibly THE most important acronym someone may ever have to use, (but hopefully also never use!), as this helps us remember what to do if we ever come across a medical emergency, such as when someone has suffered a cardiac arrest.

D - check for DANGER! Check it is ok to approach the person, and try and get a…..

R - response. Shout at them, poke them. If they do not stir, then….

S - SHOUT! SCREAM! - for help! Get someone to dial 999, or dial 999 yourself on loudspeaker. Tell the Operator where you are and what the situation is before you, then…..

A - check their airway, to see if it is blocked. If not, check they are…..

B - breathing. If not, then….

C - give chest compressions (for 30 seconds, regular rhythm, short pause to rest, then carry on….), or, if you / someone else can…..

D - go get that defibrillator.

For their special day of bespoke sessions to help celebrate and learn the important information that ‘International Restart a Heart Day’ teaches us all, every Year 8 student is learning how to get and keep a ‘healthy heart’, and also how to give hands-on CPR.

Sir Trevor Lawson McDonald is a Trinidadian-British newsreader and journalist, best known for his career as a news presenter with ITN. After working as a print and broadcast journalist in Trinidad McDonald was employed by BBC Radio as a producer, based in London but still broadcasting to the Caribbean.

In 1973, he became a reporter for ITN, then went on to become a presenter. He interviewed figures from Nelson Mandela to Saddam Hussein, and became the first sole presenter of News At Ten.
