But today, our lovely Abby was laid to rest. Thank you to Liza who represented Giselle at her funeral, while the rest of us live streamed in. What a beautiful service that Abby created herself. The music, the poetry, the eulogy, the stunning performance from Portsmouth Players. With Lyn Richardson as the celebrant, also a wonderful representative of the ISTD.

A very sad announcement today I’m afraid 😢

For those of you who were fortunate to be in classes with Abby, will know the courageous battle with cancer she was fighting. We watched her, in awe, as she came back to classes, week in week out, amidst her treatment, taking breaks only when she felt she really had to. After doctors told her she wouldn’t dance again, she proved them all wrong and went on to pass intermediate tap AND get her DDE. Abby had actually undergone surgery on her lung two weeks before her inter tap exam and STILL went in with her absolute best self and smashed it.

Abby was the last person ever to receive our Spirit of Giselle award, which we gave annually to those who stood out as going the extra mile and 100% embodied the ethos of Giselle. It needed no explanation, we all knew how hard she worked in the face of her battle.

Despite this, Abby showed up with a smile, radiated positivity and was an absolute delight.

After six years of fighting, Abby peacefully passed away on Thursday night at home with her family. Such a young, brave and courageous person who will be greatly missed but remembered with such love and fondness 🪽

Of course, Abby made sure she wrote a book, recorded a beautiful song as part of her legacy and put on a concert that we recently had the privilege of going to watch. All proceeds go to fundraising for Sarcoma UK so I will post information if anyone wishes to make a little contribution which would mean so much to Abby and her family 🙏🏼

Catherine Ingram has a Masters in Dance Technique Pedagogy, is a Fellow of the ISTD and been successfully entering student teachers for the ISTD Diploma in Dance Education for 15 years. Whether you are beginning your teaching journey, or just need to complete one or two units, Catherine will guide you through with friendly, informal online sessions.
