The ICG is now an internationally renowned center of excellence for cosmological research with funding from the main UK and European agencies (STFC, RS, EC, HEFCE). In the 2008 UK government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 75% of the ICG research was judged to be "Internationally Excellent" or better (3* or 4* status, with 4* being the highest). This ranking places the ICG in the top 5 Applied Maths groups in the UK.

We're thrilled to share that on Monday 10 November 2025 (6pm) at the University of Portsmouth we’re hosting an exciting talk titled: “The 2025 Nobel Prize – Quantum Tunnelling and Macroscopic Quantized Circuits”.

Join us as Professor Jordan (Kennedy Chair in Physics, Chapman University) steps through:
- The foundational physics of superconducting circuits and quantum tunnelling
- How those quantum phenomena are driving today’s quantum sensing, measurement and computing technologies.

🔭 Stargazing at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is back in Action Stations and HMS Warrior on Wednesday 31 January 2024 from 6pm to 9pm.

🪐 Join astrophysicists and cosmologists from the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, navigation experts from the National Museum of the Royal Navy, amateur astronomers from Hampshire Astronomical Group, space engineers from Airbus Defence and Space, the Dark Skies team from the South Downs National Park, and more at this free event that explores navigation through space and time.

🌟 During the evening you will have the opportunity to take a look through a telescope, learn how sailors navigate by the stars, and find out more about our Universe. Short talks will be given throughout the night on topics within stargazing, cosmology and space. There will be a range of activities to suit all ages, with plenty to do and see whether it’s clear or cloudy.

🎟️ Entry is guaranteed from 6 – 7.30pm for 6pm entry tickets and from 7.30 – 8.30pm for 7.30pm entry tickets; entry outside of these times will be at the event organiser’s discretion. Once you are inside the event you are welcome to stay until it ends at 9pm. In previous years attendees have typically spent around 1.5 hours at the event.

Entry to this event is free but requires a pre-booked ticket.
