Bookings are open for our Topical Fluoride Application course for registered Dental Nurses, taking place in November. This two day practical course will enable delegates to provide effective fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme and/or on prescription from a dentist or as part of a structured dental health programme.
During this course delegates will be taught the safe practical application of fluoride varnish, learn how to communicate with patients regarding the application of topical fluoride and gain the appropriate consent. Delegates will also understand how to be prepared to communicate effectively with patients, parents, carers and colleagues with different social and cultural backgrounds and with different care needs.
The speaker Debbie Withers is a Senior Dental Care Professional Teaching Fellow and Dental Therapist at the School of Dental, Health and Care Professions.
The course will take place at the Dental Academy on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November 2024, 9.00am - 4.45pm

Today we attended the Year 5 and 6 Careers Information Fair at Wallisdean Junior School. The children learnt about all the different careers in Dentistry and played with some extraction models!

The PgCert is a one year part time course where dentists will gain the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to carry out sedation in their practice, a highly sought after dental skill.
Students will learn practical skills at the Dental Academy - which has been accredited by the Sedation Training Accreditation Committee (STAC) - and at the clinical facilities of our partner provider, Solent NHS Trust Special Care Dental Services.
Both training centres feature the latest specialist equipment to help explore dental sedation techniques safely under expert supervision.

Our next hands on CPD course is taking place on Friday 31st May 2024.
This 'Introduction to Dental Implant Nursing' course is designed to provide dental nurses with a foundational understanding of dental implant nursing.
Participants will gain insights into the basics of dental implants, asepsis, placement procedures, instrumentation, post-operative care and the role of dental nurses in assisting with implant procedures.

The Dental Academy provides academic and clinical education to dental professional students in three environments; classroom, simulated laboratory and clinic, and provides an NHS primary care dental service to patients.
The Dental Nurse provides support to staff and students on the dental clinics to ensure an exceptional clinical experience for our students and high quality service to our patients.

Today our level 4 Dental Nurse students visited the Gordon Museum in London with their tutors Jane and Sue. King’s Gordon Museum of Pathology is the largest medical museum in the UK and contains some rare and unique artefacts. The Museum’s primary function has always been to help train medical, dental and biomedical students and professionals to diagnose disease.

Our Level 6 Dental Hygiene student Ella Cleveland-Smith recently took part in an important programme to encourage newly qualified and soon to be qualified health and social care workers to discuss the emotional aspects of their profession in a safe space.
NHS England South East has funded four universities and six NHS Trusts on the south coast to run Schwartz Rounds (theschwartzcenter.org/programs/schwartz-rounds/), in an effort to bolster interprofessional learning, reduce psychological distress and promote staff wellbeing.

On the 14th February 2024 we are holding an evening CPD training course on Autism and Learning Disabilities (Tier 1).
It is recommended that all CQC providers should be trained in treating patients with Autism and Learning Disabilities. This course will enable delegates to have a better understanding of people's needs, resulting in a better service and improved health and wellbeing outcomes.
