Emotional Exhaustion: The Stage Before Burnout

Have you ever felt tired, even after a good night's sleep?

Not physically tired.

Emotionally tired.

The kind of exhaustion that rest alone doesn't seem to fix.

You still get up.
You still go to work.
You still look after your family.
You still do what needs to be done.

But inside, something feels different.

You feel drained.
Less patient.
Less motivated.
Less enthusiastic about things that once brought you joy.
If this sounds familiar, you may be experiencing emotional exhaustion.

And it's often the stage that comes before burnout.

From a coaching psychology perspective, emotional exhaustion occurs when the demands placed upon us consistently exceed the emotional resources we have available.

In simple terms:
You've been giving more than you've been receiving.
More energy.
More time.
More attention.
More emotional support.
More responsibility.

Over time, your emotional reserves begin to run low.
The challenge is that emotional exhaustion doesn't happen overnight. It builds gradually. Which is why many people don't recognise it until it becomes overwhelming.

Some common signs include:
• Feeling emotionally drained most days
• Struggling to feel motivated
• Becoming more irritable than usual
• Feeling detached from people or activities
• Difficulty concentrating
• Increased anxiety or worry
• A desire to withdraw and be left alone

Many people try to push through these feelings.
They tell themselves they just need to work harder.
Try harder.
Be stronger.

But emotional exhaustion is not a sign of weakness. It is often a sign that you've been strong for too long without giving yourself permission to recharge. Your mind and body are asking for something.

What Makes a Great Life Coach?

In reality, the opposite is often true.

Overthinking: Why Your Mind Won't Switch Off

Have you ever found yourself replaying the same conversation over and over again?

-Analysing every word.
-Every possibility.
-Every potential outcome.

Perhaps you've lain awake at night, exhausted but unable to switch your mind off.

-Thinking.
-Worrying.
-Planning.
-Rehearsing.

Overthinking can feel as though your mind is working against you.

But what if it's actually trying to protect you?

From a coaching psychology perspective, overthinking is often linked to uncertainty.

Your brain dislikes uncertainty because uncertainty can feel unsafe.

✔ So it tries to solve every possible problem before it happens.
✔ It searches for answers.
✔ Predicts outcomes.
✔ Looks for risks.
✔ Creates plans.
✔ And then creates backup plans for those plans.

! The intention is protection !

The problem is that your mind can become trapped in an endless cycle of thinking without taking action.

-Instead of creating clarity, overthinking often creates confusion.

-Instead of helping you move forward, it keeps you stuck in place.

Many people believe that if they think long enough, they will eventually find the perfect answer.

But life rarely works that way.
Some decisions cannot be thought through.
They must be lived through.

The truth is that certainty is often found through action, not endless analysis.

Sometimes the next step becomes clear only after you take it.

This doesn't mean ignoring important decisions.

It means recognising when thinking has become a substitute for living.

-When reflection becomes rumination.
-When preparation becomes avoidance.
-When caution becomes fear.

What Makes Coaching Different from Therapy?

One of the most common questions I hear from people and aspiring coaches is:

"What's the difference between coaching and therapy?"

While both professions support people, they do so in different ways.

Therapy often focuses on helping people understand, process and heal from past experiences, emotional wounds or mental health challenges.

Coaching, on the other hand, is primarily future-focused.
A coach helps clients identify where they are now, where they want to be and how to bridge that gap.

Rather than only asking:
"What happened to you?"

A coach is more likely to ask:
" What happened to you? – then - Where would you like to go from here?"

At its heart, coaching is about growth, possibility and potential.

It helps people:

✔ Build confidence
✔ Overcome limiting beliefs
✔ Improve relationships
✔ Create healthier habits
✔ Navigate life transitions

Anxiety: When Your Brain Thinks You're in Danger

Have you ever felt anxious even though nothing dangerous was happening?
- Your heart races.
- Your mind won't stop thinking.
- You feel restless, tense or on edge.
- You struggle to relax, even when everything appears to be fine.

If so, you're not alone.

One of the biggest misconceptions about anxiety is that it means something is wrong with you. In reality, anxiety is often your brain trying to protect you.

From a psychological perspective, anxiety is linked to our survival system.

Thousands of years ago, this system helped our ancestors stay alive by detecting threats and preparing them to fight, flee or freeze. The problem is that our brains don't always distinguish between a life-threatening danger and a stressful life situation.

- A difficult conversation.
- Financial worries.
- Work pressure.
- Relationship problems.
- Uncertainty about the future.

To your brain, these situations can sometimes feel like danger.
As a result, your body responds as if you need to protect yourself.

- Your heart beats faster.
- Your muscles tense.
- Your thoughts race.
- Your nervous system becomes alert.

The challenge is that many people then become anxious about feeling anxious.

- They start fighting the anxiety itself.
- They judge themselves.
- They wonder why they can't simply "switch it off."

But what if anxiety isn't your enemy?

What if it's a signal?

A message from your mind and body asking you to pay attention to something important.

That doesn't mean every anxious thought is true. It simply means your nervous system is trying to keep you safe.

The goal is not to eliminate anxiety completely.
The goal is to understand it, manage it and respond to it with compassion rather than fear.

The Hidden Cost of Always Being Strong

Have you ever noticed that the people who appear strongest on the outside are often carrying the heaviest burdens on the inside?

✔The ones who keep going.
✔The ones who rarely complain.
✔The ones everyone turns to when things go wrong.
✔The ones who always seem to have it together.

Perhaps you're one of them. Being strong is often seen as a positive quality. And it can be.

✔Resilience helps us navigate life's challenges.
✔Strength helps us overcome difficult times.

But there can be a hidden cost when being strong becomes your default way of living.

-When you're always the strong one, you may stop asking for help.
