Portsmouth High School offers a packed co-curricular programme and Illustration Club at the prep school is just one of the many popular clubs on offer.

Before the Easter break pupils took inspiration from Roald Dahl’s famous monster characters and created their own using a range of techniques. Hornswoggler, Whangdoodles and Snozzwanglers came to life when imaginations ran riot and were expressed through some beautiful colourful artwork.

What a fantastic show by our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils who performed ‘Dragon Days’ for an audience of parents, friends and staff.

Tommy Rumble, and his fearsome mother, find themselves in the pretty alpine village of Stumbledorf and set to work to free the villagers from the fear of a mythical creature. Their fears are faced and the mighty dragon turns out not to be so fearsome after all.

Well done girls for all your hard work and for creating such an enjoyable performance.

This week neurodiversity is being celebrated across the school. There are a range of activities taking place designed to both celebrate and inform.

During Monday lunchtime, some of our Year 11 pupils visited the art room at the prep school to create a piece of artwork together with prep school girls. Their art portrayed the beauty of the brain and showed that even though it is diverse in how it functions, each aspect of the brain’s diversity is beautiful in its own way.

Portsmouth High School was delighted to welcome Canine Partners to the senior school to talk to Year 7. The charity is dedicated to making life a little easier for people struggling with many of the daily tasks we take for granted due to life changing injury or illness. Canine Partners trains assistance dogs to help people in their own homes and when they are out and about.

It was great to meet the speakers but the real centre of attention was Vimto, a labrador cross retriever who came to demonstrate an incredible range of skills such as finding a mobile phone, switching on a light and even helping his trainer get undressed.

Year 7 were well and truly inspired to get started on their fundraising for the charity. So far previous year groups have raised just over £5000 and our aim is to beat the £7500 target when the school gets to name a new assistance dog. Good Luck Year 7 with all your fundraising ventures.

Pre-School children were excited to be part of British Science Week when science teacher Miss Watson visited to carry out an experiment with the class.

Pupils had an early introduction to chromatography when they looked at how felt tip pen ink could be separated out into its component colours using filter paper and water. They also looked at how liquid soap repelled milk using food colours to show the activity caused by the soap.

Miss Watson said ‘British Science Week has been an ideal opportunity to share some simple scientific experiments with our youngest pupils. At this age their curiosity is growing and they enjoy finding out about and making sense of the world around them. It is an ideal time to introduce them to science and then nurture their interest, enthusiasm and understanding as they move through the school’.

The Politics Society, hosted at Portsmouth High School GDST, was delighted to welcome Lady Rose of Colmworth, currently the only female Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Lady Rose gave a fascinating talk on the role of the Court in relation to the UK constitution and human rights. She also gave an insight into her career path and how she has got to where she is today.

Last week saw the return of Miss Braga’s third annual Lunchtime Voice Recital for her singing pupils. The audience was entertained by pupils of all ages from Year 7 up to Year 13 who sang a variety of repertoire ranging from classical to musical theatre, and even a little bit of opera. The concert concluded with two solos from Handel’s Messiah by Elspeth and Francesca and a Handel aria from Lucy Braga - Soprano.

Congratulations to all the participants for their beautiful singing. Miss Braga would like to thank Director of Music, Mr Tinsley, for his help organising the concert and Miss Kingsley for accompanying on the piano so beautifully.

British Science Week celebrations launched today at Portsmouth High School GDST with a look back to the time when constellations were formed. The beautiful formations of our planets were expressed through pebble painting capturing many of the familiar patterns we see in the sky today.

Thank you to Anna in Year 12 who launched academic lecture week in assembly this morning for Years 7 to 9. This week our younger pupils will listen to a series of academic lectures designed to take learning and understanding beyond the curriculum with university-style lectures.

This morning Anna took us through the fascinating history of women’s football and how the war years were both a help and hindrance in the evolution of the sport.

In celebration of the day Portsmouth High School’s Deputy Head Girl Olivia performed in Blue Stockings at The Groundlings Theatre, in a thought provoking play set in 1896 at Girton College, Cambridge, home to the first female university students, which has just opened its doors. Its principal, Mrs Welsh (played by a former drama teacher at the school, Mrs Lauren Farnhill), vows to steer the students through their education, while passionately petitioning for their right to graduate like their male contemporaries.

To find out more from Olivia and her part in the play, from the Director, and from Mrs Farnhill visit the latest news story on the school website at https://bit.ly/49Yyp9G

Our thanks to Martin Willoughby for the photography.

Thank you to Ellie Shore (née Harrison) who returned to school this morning to talk about her career as a Physician Associate. The last speaker for our ‘Girls Like You’ careers series this week, Ellie spoke passionately about her job and the career path she has taken to reach her goal.

When her plans didn’t quite work out Ellie reassessed her priorities and finally found the job she loves today. ‘Girls Like You’ this week has provided valuable insights for our current pupils and we look forward to the time when they too return to school to speak about their own career paths.

World Book Day (UK & Ireland) was celebrated in style at Portsmouth High Prep and Pre-School today when staff and pupils arrived at school dressed as characters from many different books. Activities in classrooms reflected the celebratory day with pupils sharing favourite books and enjoying a book scavenger hunt. Year 7 have just completed an open homework project as part of the Gifted, Able, Talented and Enrichment (GATE) programme at Portsmouth High School GDST.

‘What does Great Britain mean to you?’ was the title of this year’s project. Pupils were invited to interpret the title through a medium of their choice instead of their normal homework for a two-week period. Read some of the Year 7's experiences at https://bit.ly/4c0tTJR

Delighted Hannah Porteous (Class of 2015) returned to school to talk in this week’s 'Girls Like You' series at the senior school. Hannah is currently a teacher at Itchen Sixth Form College. She found teaching after trying various routes and different courses including Aberdeen and Portsmouth Universities.

'I thank the school for presenting so many opportunities to me,’ she said. ‘Spend time volunteering which gives you the chance to meet other people and grow your skill set. It's okay to change your mind.'

Girls Like You… this week alumnae return to school to talk in assembly and share where their career paths have taken them since leaving PHS. This morning, Bria, class of 2015, came to share her love of meteorology and some of the exciting locations her career at the Met Office has taken her so far.

Girls Like You is just one part of the excellent careers programme at Portsmouth High School GDST. Careers advice starts in Year 5 and continues throughout the school, into the sixth form, and beyond. It is not uncommon for former students to reconnect with our Head of Careers, Mrs Davies, after their graduation to seek advice on their next steps.

Year 7 made a great start on the path to understanding genetics when they found out how to extract DNA from strawberries in their science lesson. They crushed strawberries and made up a DNA extraction liquid from detergent, salt and water to break down the cell walls of the strawberry and release the DNA. After filtering the solution and adding cold alcohol, the DNA could be seen collecting at the top of the test tube.

Science teacher Dr Filer said ‘This simple practical lesson was a real success and the girls’ sense of amazement at actually seeing real DNA was a joy to see. This will help set up their understanding of and interest in genetics as they progress through the school.’
