Dear Year 5 Parents,
In our Art classes, your children have been delving into the fascinating world of patterns. From intricate designs to bold motifs, they've been exploring how patterns manifest in various forms of art and culture. We believe that understanding patterns not only fosters creativity but also enhances their appreciation for the world around them.
Throughout this exploration, we've drawn inspiration from different artists and techniques. By studying the works of renowned artists, both past and present, your children are gaining insight into how patterns can be used to convey emotions, stories, and perspectives.

To bring their own ideas to life, we've been using a variety of tools and mediums. Sketch pencils allow for precise lines and intricate details, while oil pastels offer a bold and vibrant palette. By experimenting with different materials, your children are honing their artistic skills and discovering new ways to express themselves creatively.

Twelve motivated and enthusiastic pupils are now part of the Green School Committee, to encourage the school community to be greener and more sustainable. On Thursday 2nd May, they completed a nice project together with the help of our caretaker, which was to repurpose an old book unit from the library into a planter ! They had great fun filling it with flowers and plants, which adds more greening and colours to Year 4 entrance. Well done everyone!

🐛🌱 Exciting News from Year 5! 🌱🐛

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We're thrilled to inform you about an engaging and hands-on learning opportunity happening in Year 5! As part of our science unit on "Living Things and Their Habitats," each Year 5 class has welcomed some very special guests into their classrooms: caterpillars!

These caterpillars are not just any ordinary classroom pets. They are here to help our students observe and learn about the fascinating life cycle of a butterfly. Over the coming days and weeks, your child will have the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the miraculous transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.

Through this interactive experience, students will not only deepen their understanding of life science concepts but also develop important skills such as observation, data recording, and critical thinking. They will be actively engaged in documenting and discussing the changes they observe in the caterpillars as they progress through each stage of their life cycle.

We believe that hands-on experiences like this are invaluable in fostering a love for science and a curiosity about the natural world. Plus, it's an incredibly exciting way for our Year 5 students to apply their learning in a real-world context.

We are so incredibly proud of the geography homework completed by our year 6 Geographers recently. A fantastic effort from all; I'm sure you will agree that their independent research has been presented very creatively. Here are some of the pieces...
Well done to all - and a special well done to our award winners for this project 👏🏼

In year 3, we have been using our decision making skills to think about our future choices in our PSHE lesson. We have been making our ‘dream lists’ of what choices we would make if we had no rules. For example, setting our own bedtime routine or going to the park whenever we wanted to.

In art, Y6 children have been carrying out preliminary studies this week in preparation for designing and making their own wire sculptures. We have discussed health and safety considerations and practised using a range of tools for bending, shaping, joining, twisting and braiding different thicknesses of wire.

This is a new skill and we have been particularly impressed with the resilience shown by all of the children as they master these new techniques.

Attention Year 5 Parents!

We're excited to share that this half term in Physical Education (PE), your children have begun their dance unit!

Dance is a fantastic way for children to express themselves creatively while improving their coordination, flexibility, and fitness levels. Throughout this unit, they'll have the opportunity to learn various dance styles, explore different rhythms, and most importantly, have fun moving to the music!

Encourage your child to share with you what they've been learning in class. It's a great way to support their enthusiasm for dance and reinforce their learning at home.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the dance unit, feel free to get in touch with us. Let's make this half term full of rhythm and joy for our Year 5 dancers!

On Monday, Year 3 went to the Guildhall to watch the "Close Up; Music for Curious Minds" concert. We loved listening to the string quartet perform a variety of classical pieces. We also learnt phrases such as “pizzacato” and “accelerando” to describe how the music is being played.

We have started a new art unit in Year 4 - Portraits. We are looking at the work of a variety of artists - Picasso, Van Gogh, Warhol and Lichtenstein. First, we researched these artists. In the next lesson, we were given a piece of art and had to mix our own colours to match the colours used - it was quite tricky!

FORE! On Friday a selection of year 5 and 6 pupils went to Charter School to try their hand at golf. The team had a range of 6 challenges to compete in. They were also scored on "The spirit of the game" where they were judged on their team work and sportsmanship. We are delighted that we not only won the "Spirit of the game" trophy but the whole festival. The team showed great determination and resilience, especially as most had never played the sport before. Well done team!

Yesterday our athletics team participated in the Indoor Athletics Hampshire County finals in Aldershot. Fernhurst were representing Portsmouth and competed against 192 other pupils across the whole of Hampshire. They all had to take part in a jumping, throwing and running event. It was the first time we had reached the county finals and the team represented Fernhurst fantastically and showed great determination and worked amazingly as a team. We are immensely proud of the pupils and a massive congratulations in placing 15th in the whole of Hampshire.
