A reminder - from boxing day we had 40 consecutive days of rainfall .... It literally rained every day

Now whilst it's hot I know, and the more vulnerable members of our communities need extra support and check ins, humans are super adaptable. We evolve, we change, we grow. You have got this and will be cool again tomorrow because with everything in life it is temporary.

What we need to remember is it rained for FORTY DAYS!! There was talk of another Arc ... Noah had literally got the blueprints out again and planning was being submitted to Dorset Council ...

If you can, enjoy the heat safely, explore the beaches, explore the sea, stay in your house with your feet in a bucket of water, wear the sleeveless shirt, take the time if you need it. Water and shade are your friends.

Practise calm thought and conscious breathing when you are happy and calm

Build it into your body's muscle memory

Keep it strong as a tool for managing resilience

It doesn't have to have a name or be fancy, it's a slow conscious heath breath in, hold for a couple of seconds, followed by a slow conscious breath out

In times when our brain is telling us to run, often the only physiological thing we have control left of is our breath.

There will be lots shared over the next few days about exam overwhelm - breathing is a great techniques and I'll share some of my easy faves but I wanted to remind all of you that feelings of anxiety and overwhelm can hit at any time.

You might drop a cup and fall apart
You might lose a sock and on any other day, you are mildly delayed, if things are heavy, it will send you over the edge.
If you're staying quiet all day in exam conditions, you might erupt when you get home

These are all normal responses to pressure and stress, sending our neurobiology into protection mode and kicking our stress responses off

Breathing helps, sure, but understanding what our brains are doing will also help because it helps you to understand we might not be in control in that moment

I'll share some insights over the next few days but I guess I'm saying if breathing practice isn't cutting it, it's because there's more going on.

Sorting the marshmallows!!

Client preferences are SO important and I would argue one of the biggest differences between private & state counselling - I am not taking away from clinical expertise or knowledge and skills, but when it comes to working with children and young people or neurodiverse clients there are some important things not to overlook.

Examples for me include

💙making sure a specific pen colour is out for one client because the wrong one disregulates
💜making sure the marshmallows don't just get plonked on the cream on the hot chocolate as there is often a pattern and a routine
💚 having choices where possible on medium, but not too many as this can then take up half of the session for a person and overwhelm

If I tell you some clients are so overwhelmed when they start working with me, even picking what chair they wish to sit in is a challenge - so we go slow. I observe, spot tells and patterns, work with them and align the environment and room with their needs, individually and to their preferences.

It's these extra touches that just sets private provision apart - that and the brownies ;)

When we talk about anxiety and different approaches to working with anxiety, we remember anxiety is universal and future oriented - so arises from perceived threat, not the event itself.

Different therapeutic approaches conceptualise it differently, therefore approach supportive working to resolve differently:

Psychodynamic: anxiety arises from internal conflict; not focused on symptom reduction.

Person‑centred: anxiety reflects conditions of worth; therapy avoids medicalised symptom‑fixing.

CBT: focuses on thoughts, behaviours, and maintaining cycles; strong evidence base for anxiety work.

I work in the latter two areas most often with young people and find that gentle appreciation of the perceived threat, plus a little reprogramming can support a persons thought processes, it takes time and practise but the young person can create a new reality for some of their goals.

We'll talk how to set goals later - but often people assume anxiety is just that - but there are different ways of approaching treatment and therapeutic approaches should flex to the young person unconditionally.

I know it's not a lot to most but it's taken me 18 months and goodness knows how many emails and verification videos to FINALLY get my dot on the map where my office is!

After a slog, Chesil Infinity sits at the right location on the map and Google profile is complete - phew!!
