I saw this post in a group. Facebook won't let me share it here for some reason so I've copied the text.

My clients often share their exam result stories with me. Not their child’s, but their own… Some still get quite emotional sharing what happened or what their parents happened to say about their exam results…

Children hang so much on what happens tomorrow, and processing the emotional highs and lows that come with this news is largely supported by you, the parent. Where’s that parent handbook again?

Handling good news is pretty easy, but how do you handle less favourable results well?

1 Avoid giving your thoughts about anything!
Centring on your child’s experience by asking them how they feel, will help you.
What are they are proud of?
Are there any surprises or disappointments?
Do they feel their grades are a fair reflection of their work?

2 Before tomorrow, recall your own story
This is not about preparing to tell it. It’s about recalling your own sensitivities to inform what you do tomorrow.
How did you feel when you read your results?
How did you deliver the actual information? Could you speak? Was it easy?
How did your own parents respond to your exam results? What did they say?
What did you wish they had said to you?
What did you need?

Reflecting on your own experience and focusing your questions on your child’s point of view will help you receive your child’s news with sensitivity.

I’d love to hear your stories! Tell me what happened to you on your results day?
