“Thank you so much; both for your detailed assessment, but more so for all your help with our daughter this year. It’s been incredibly beneficial for her and we have both noticed and commented on the clear improvement in her reading especially.”

Can you crack the code? Give me a 👍🏼 in the comments if you can and read the caption below 👇🏼

This post is designed to demonstrate the power of Phonics. If you are able to work out what this post says chances are you had to revert back to your Phonic knowledge to decode and read the words. For example, knowing that 'ui', 'ew' and 'ue' can all make an /oo/ sound like in 'fruit', 'new' and 'blue'; that 'oe' and 'ow' make an /oa/ sound like in 'toe' and 'snow'; or 'y' can make an /i/ like in 'rhythm'.

Experienced, efficient and effective readers read words automatically with very little conscious effort. Consider the words in this caption; you do not need to rely on Phonics to read them because you have built up a large bank of familiar words that are stored in your long term memory. However, if you attempt to read a complicated, unfamiliar word then you will revert back to your phonic knowledge to read it and draw on your experience of the graphemes and phonemes within other more familiar words. Think about reading dinosaur names or scientific terms. Try reading the name of the dinosaur below:

Huehuecanauhtlus tiquichensis.

This is what children just starting out on their reading journey are initially doing. In the beginning every word is an unfamiliar word and they need to rely on their phonic knowledge to read them. By teaching children Phonics you are equipping them with the tools to decode and attempt to read any new and unfamiliar words. This is why teaching children to read has, quite rightly, moved away from sight reading and the memorisation of words. Phonics is the key to cracking the code of the English language!

Dr Martin Kozloff (2002) stated, "If a child memorized ten words, the child can only read ten words, but if a child learns the sounds of ten letters, the child will be able to read 350 three-sound words, 4,320 four-sound words, and 21,650 five-sound words."
