NEW SPECIALIST ACTOR TRAINING FOR YOUNG PERFORMERS IN NORTHERN IRELAND.

The Shelley Lowry School is launching a new specialist acting training programme for children and young people age 8-18 years in Northern Ireland who have demonstrated the ability, instinct or potential to become exceptional actors and want to develop their talent further.

Designed for aspiring young actors or those whom already have some professional credits under their belt, the programme offers serious, structured actor training from an early age, combining professional standards with the creativity, confidence and enjoyment that make performance so powerful.

This is not simply another acting class. It is a focused pathway for young actors who may want to work professionally and would like to build the skills, discipline and understanding needed to take that ambition seriously.

Northern Ireland’s screen industry has transformed over the past 15 years. Our young actors are growing up in a region where major film and television productions are now regularly made and where opportunities that once required leaving Northern Ireland can increasingly begin here.

We want their training to reflect that.

As part of this new programme, our teaching team will undertake specialist training with The Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art in Dublin, which has an academic association with RADA. We begin that training this week and will bring this new approach directly back to our students.

The programme will introduce young actors to the craft and discipline of professional actor training; helping them understand character, text, technique, physical and vocal work, interpretation and the demands of working as an actor.

Alongside their practical development, students will also work towards recognised acting examinations, meaning they can continue to gain formal qualifications and, at the appropriate grades, valuable UCAS points for future university applications.

At The Shelley Lowry School, our students can already train in Acting for Screen, Musical Theatre, Speech & Drama, Communication Skills, Dance and performance.

This new pathway allows us to go further for those children who have shown particular potential in Acting.

It is about identifying talent. Nurturing it properly. Challenging it. And giving young actors the foundations they need when applying to third level institutions and to be industry-ready when the opportunities come.

We are enormously proud to be bringing this level of training to young performers in Northern Ireland.

A new pathway. A higher level of training.
For the next generation of Northern Irish actors.

Classes will be offered in 10 week blocks starting in October.

Further details, including eligibility and how students will be selected for the programme will be announced soon.

OUR FIRST EVER GRADUATES!

This is a very special milestone for us.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the first graduates of our two-year, Spotlight-accredited professional acting training programme.

Two years of focused, industry-led training designed for those serious about developing their craft and preparing for professional work.

Over the course of the programme, our graduating students have:

* Completed two Acting for Screen qualifications with Trinity College London
* Participated in two professional agency showcases at The MAC, Belfast, performing for invited industry guests
* Developed practical skills across acting for screen, self-taping, scene study, character development, voice, movement, accents and professional industry practice
* And importantly, completed training that enables them to apply for Spotlight membership via the professional training route, subject to Spotlight's current eligibility requirements.

For emerging actors, this matters.

A Spotlight profile is one of the key professional tools used across the UK and Irish casting industry.

Our graduates can now list their two-year training within the Training section of their Spotlight profile, giving casting professionals a clear record of the structured professional development behind their work.

But graduation doesn't have to mean goodbye.

These actors now have the option to continue training with us, allowing them to keep developing their craft, work regularly on new material and maintain the discipline that professional acting demands while beginning the next stage of their careers.

When we created this programme, we wanted to build something that was affordable, accessible and that bridged the gap between acting classes and the professional industry - serious training, recognised qualifications, performance opportunities and a genuine pathway forward.

Two years later, our very first cohort has completed that journey.

We couldn't be prouder of them!

Congratulations to the Class of 2026.

Heartfelt congratulations to Adam Charles ATCL, and Drew Frazer ATCL on being awarded their Diplomas from Trinity College London ❤️

Adam has been an amazing student at the school for many years. He has been a valued cast member of our theatre group, and hard working young man with the best manners. He now leaves us with a Diploma in Speech and Drama and is off to study Chemical Engineering at Queens.

Drew has three ATCL diplomas in Communication Skills, Speech and Drama and Music Theatre. Drew has also been a fabulous team member and student, and heads off to study Politics and History at Queens.

These two great friends will be sorely missed. They are great role models and have a brilliant future ahead of them. ❤️

Three Acting students from our Spotlight Accredited Training Programme were spotted at our industry showcase at The Mac by Cameron Menzies, Head of NI Opera, and have since been cast in the upcoming production of Carmen at the Grand Opera House.

It’s exactly the kind of outcome our training is built for: real industry attention, leading to real employment.

Huge congratulations to Mncedisi Mbondiya, Charlie Stanley and Filip Kazubski.

We are incredibly grateful to both Cameron and NIOPERA for this opportunity.
