We are looking for presenters and guests for future Politics Today shows filmed on Tuesdays 11-1:15 at Poole Gateway. Do you want to try your hand at presenting or being a guest to talk about a political issue explored on the show? We are looking for students who would like to be a TV interviewer for the BU Politics Show - Politics Today. The next slot is May 2nd 10:30-1:30 at Poole Gateway. Contact David McQueen through his work email for more information or if you are interested.

Last semester Level 6 BU Politics students on the History and Political Struggle through Film unit took part in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Outreach Programme where we were able to hear a presentation from, and talk to, a Holocaust survivor guest speaker. BU Politics Society is now engaged in a new opportunity which is open to universities across England in April and May called the Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project.

This 4 part project only costs £59 per person and includes educational seminars and a one day visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum in Poland. For more information and eligibility criteria, and to sign up please click on the link at the end of this post.

The project is open to, amongst others, all 'leaders and members of student political societies' (as a Politics/Politics and Economics/Law student you are by default a member of BU's Politics Society).

The Lessons from Auschwitz project has four mandatory components in April and May and can be found below:

The Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project is an educational initiative delivered by the Holocaust Educational Trust in partnership with the Union of Jewish students, with support from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

In an increasingly fragile political climate, antisemitism, intolerance and prejudice are on the rise. The Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project aims to bring together student and campus leaders from across university campuses in England. Through education about the Holocaust and anti-racism work together we can combat antisemitism and promote community cohesion. Our goal is to reinforce the common endeavour of students and campus staff of all faiths (and none) to create safe, inclusive and cohesive communities on campus and beyond and equip them with the tools needed to tackle antisemitism, racism and intolerance wherever it is found.

Nils Melzer, Professor of International Law at the University of Glasgow, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Human Rights Chair at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian says Julian Assange is a political prisoner who has not receved a fair trial.

Prof Melzer is ringing the alarm which is heard clearly in Geneva but which has been silenced with our media's help in London. Yet it is in South East London where Assange is held in Belmarsh - a Maximum Security prison for dangerous criminals and terrorists - where Melzer argues Assange has been psychologically tortured. The results of this torture are plain to see in Assange's weight loss, mental deterioration and stroke and it is likely he will die in a British or US jail unless public pressure for his release builds.

You are unlikely to hear about that campaign in the British mainstream media - yet the future of journalism, publishing, whistleblowing (from Collateral Damage to last Christmas's No 10 Mincepiegate) is at stake. We must talk about this case because the future of our freedom to speak and know about the secrets corporations, the military and our governments want to hide from us depends on it.
