Swan Lake at Lighthouse Poole
Mergaliyev Classical Ballet.

Wonderful evening! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
How wonderful to escape to a concert at Lighthouse, especially it is in my doorstep. Tonight it was Sibelius, Shostakovich and absolutely genius Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances. Incredible performance! # Dance

Valentin Serov (born in St.Petersburg 159 years ago) was a Russian painter and one of the most prominent artists of his time.
Born to an artistic family on 19.01.1865, this creative environment shaped his talent from an early age. His mother decided to move to Paris after seeing her Valentin draw. There he was taught by the already famous Ilya Repin.
In 1880, entered the Academy of Arts in St.Petersburg, where he was taught by Pavel Chistyakov (a Russian painter and teacher of art, who also taught , , and ). He terminated his studies five years later because, in his own words, he «got bored».
During the 1880’s Serov traveled abroad and met the French . His breakthrough work was the now-famous «Girl with Peaches» (1887), which brought him recognition and admiration.
By the late 1890’s Serov had gained a reputation as one the best Russian portraitists of his time, on par with his teacher Repin, painting artists, actors and aristocrats.
When working with nobility, Serov insisted on ninety sittings – three months of hard work. His models had to sit still for hours, with the slightest movement causing the artist’s discontent.
Valentin Serov’s best works are among the greatest of Russian realistic art. In 1911, he designed a famous drop curtain for Sergei 's “Scheherazade”, depicting the departure of the Sultan for the hunt.
: Historians recall a case when Serov made a portrait of a monarch – Nicholas II. The Empress Alexandra Feodorovna asked her husband to strike his usual pose and started to examine him and the portrait carefully, making critical remarks. The astounded artist listened to the criticism in silence, before eventually losing his temper: handing the palette to the Empress, he said that it would have been great if she made portraits herself. The Emperor personally apologised for his spouse’s faux pas.
