We catch up with Jemma, a former Rockley College student, who graduated in 2026. Prior to joining Rockley, Jemma had started studying A-Levels but soon discovered that the traditional classroom-based approach wasn’t right for her. So, she took another path.

“I did a year of A-Levels, but soon realised it just wasn’t for me. I wanted something more practical where I could get outside, be active and find friends with the same interests. I’ve always had a love for sports especially watersports. If I could combine that while learning through doing and gaining A-Level equivalent grades, it was a no brainer!”

Rockley might be a name you’ve only recently come across, but we’ve been introducing people to outdoor adventure for 50 years. For teachers discovering us today, that history is part of a story that now includes day trips, residentials and mountain experiences.

Much has changed in that time, but the value of giving young people space to try something different remains. Away from familiar routines, pupils have opportunities to become more independent, work with different classmates and discover interests they might not encounter at school.

Our three Dorset-based activity centres and our summer and ski mountain trips all offer something slightly different and of course, no trip produces the same outcome for every pupil. Some come home talking about a new skill; others remember a funny moment with friends or feeling proud that they managed time away from home. Those experiences have value without needing to become a dramatic story of transformation.

After 50 years, these remain some of the most meaningful parts of outdoor education: time to practise, room to make mistakes and the chance for teachers and pupils to see one another in a different light.

Rockley College - What happens in the classroom?
