OPPOSITION (EX MORNING CLOUD II) : SPARKMAN & STEPHENS 41 FT IOR BERMUDAN SLOOP 1971/2008
This beautiful piece of mid-century, Sparkman & Stephen-designed sailing hardware in all its glossy mahogany glory, OPPOSITION, formerly Ted Heath’s second MORNING CLOUD, is as fine and as famous an example as they come from an era when racing yachts - even those built to the then quite new IOR Rule - could still look beautiful to anyone’s eye. Seventeen years on from a major rebuild undertaken at her original builders, Clare Lallow, OPPOSITION still looks just out of restoration and comes available just when interest in boats of her era is on the rise. A new class for such yachts has been inaugurated by C.I.M. at the Mediterranean classic regattas. OPPOSITION is very carefully laid up indoors and is in antifoul and go condition.

ARROW : 35 FT WEST SOLENT ONE DESIGN W-1 1924/1999
ARROW was among the first of the West Solents to be built at Lymington in 1924, and the last of a lucky group of these ultra elegant and fast 1920s sports boats to be restored by Peter Brookes at Maldon through the 1990s. She has subsequently become arguably the best known of them, campaigned very successfully in two ownerships over 25 years in both Mediterranean and south and southeast of England classic regattas. ARROW is also unarguably the best equipped classic regatta package, optimised to compete under both CIM and IRC rules, and transported (and ‘dry sailed’ indoors) aboard her very own UK and EU-legal 19-tonne truck that is included in the sale. What is there not to like?!

FIFI : WILLIAM FIFE III / HENRY B. NEVINS 40 FT R-CLASS SLOOP 1925/2024
Designed by Fife of Fairlie, Scotland, and built by Nevins of City Island, New York — yacht design and build pedigree doesn’t get much better. When Larchmont Yacht Club member Harry L. Maxwell decided to join the burgeoning mid-1920s Long Island Sound Universal Rule R-Class fleet, his Ulster-Scots ancestry took him to William Fife III for the design of FIFI and he had her built relatively locally by the perfectionist, Henry B. Nevins. During seven summers of hard class racing, and many more as a performance cruiser-racer that’s a lot of fun to sail, FIFI’s pedigree stood her in good stead. The inevitable later life deep restoration in current ownership means that FIFI enters her second century as strong if not stronger than her first, and as beautiful as ever.

HAVSÖRNEN : TORE HOLM 53 FT BERMUDAN CUTTER 1937/1987
HAVSÖRNEN is a very fine example of Scandinavian design and boat building from Tore Holm at the peak of his powers with the build supervised by him in his family yard. Well maintained by her present owner, including a major winter refit 2016-2017 in her last ownership; she has over the years excelled on the Mediterranean regatta circuit and has also proven herself a very capable cruising yacht. Her seaworthy hull provides good headroom below, and the interior finish is a delight.
HAVSÖRNEN is coming back to our list very shortly; we raced her in St Tropez some 5 years ago and she is fun to sail; quick to accelerate and potentially a race winner in the Vintage Class…S&S Yawls watch out!?
