End of Day 2 – SSSTS ✅

I’ve had the pleasure of teaching a fantastic group of delegates over the last couple of days.

As always, there’s been a good mixture of great conversation, some hard-hitting messages, necessary legal compliance and, importantly, plenty of laughs along the way.

For me, good health and safety training shouldn’t just be about passing a course. It should give people something they can take back to site, challenge the way they think, and ultimately help them become better supervisors.

Grenfell and the Construction Sector

Yesterday I attended the Grenfell briefing event at the University of Plymouth, delivered exceptionally well by Peter Apps and supported by the event sponsors.

It was a powerful and thought-provoking session.

Hearing the catalogue of failures that led up to the Grenfell Tower disaster is incredibly difficult, particularly when you consider how many opportunities there were for things to have been done differently.

As an industry, we have to learn from what happened.

The construction sector is changing, albeit slowly, and I hope the Building Safety Act and the wider changes to building safety culture provide the framework needed to drive genuine and lasting improvement.

For me, one of the biggest messages from the event was that compliance alone isn’t enough. Competence, accountability, leadership and culture all matter.

Events like this are an important reminder of why we do what we do in health, safety and construction training.

Thank you to Peter Apps, the University of Plymouth and everyone involved in putting on such a valuable event.

Staring back at me is the person I’ve become.
The journey I’ve been on.
And probably the most critical and harshest judge of all — myself.
The last 8 months have tested me more than I’d like to admit. Business pressures, difficult decisions, responsibility, uncertainty and stress. At times, I’ve felt pushed close to breaking point.
But sometimes you need to be tested.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have a proper break over the last couple of weeks. Time away has given me some perspective and, more importantly, reminded me that I still want to build, learn and challenge myself.
So I’m going into the rest of 2026 with a different mindset.
JRS Safety Solutions is launching.
I’m starting my MBA.
And I’m changing the pathway of JRS Training to build something stronger and more sustainable for the future.
I think I’ve needed the challenge.
One thing that has kept me grounded throughout all of it has been training.
Getting into the gym every day. Putting the headphones in. Switching everything else off for an hour and pushing myself.
It’s genuinely been my saviour.
There’s still a lot to figure out. There will undoubtedly be more difficult days.
But I’m ready for the next chapter.
Time to get after it 🧡

🪚 Cut-Off Saw Training at David R White

A great session today, with some really useful conversations around the health and safety benefits of battery-powered tools.

We even had a few converts from petrol to battery! 🔋

Delegates found that the battery-powered saw gave them greater control, particularly when cutting smaller strips off slabs compared with using a petrol saw.

It was great to see everyone getting hands-on, comparing the equipment and building their confidence in the safe use of cut-off saws.

This week has got off to a great start! We had a packed course for Temporary Works Supervisor at our Poole venue today 👏

I also had the pleasure of visiting SA Webber to provide the team with ongoing NVQ support. A highlight was receiving a nice bottle of w**e to thank me for the ongoing support. It’s small gestures like this that make it all worthwhile 🍷

BEEN OPERATING A DUMPER FOR YEARS? GET QUALIFIED FOR IT.

If you’ve already got the experience, you don’t necessarily need to spend days being trained from scratch.

JRS Training’s NPORS Forward Tipping Dumper Experienced Worker Test (N204) is designed for experienced dumper operators who want to have their skills formally assessed and gain the accreditation they need.

🚜 Your existing skills and experience are assessed
📋 Includes both theory and practical assessment
🎓 Suitable for traditional or CSCS NPORS cards
