We live in troubled times, that’s for sure, and it’s fair to say in these troubled times there are a fair share of troubled individuals, those who take any opportunity to attempt to discredit the efforts of those who succeed at what they do in life.
This has been true for the past few years with our school and my teachings. Although I am fortunate to have an excellent pedigree, am recognized at an international level and connected to the family who trained Bruce Lee, for some people that isn’t enough and apparently I don’t understand the art I’ve been training and teaching for well over 30 years. Not only don’t I understand the art but its been suggested that I’ve watered it down.
Hmm, couldn’t be further from the truth, at Lun Kuen we teach 100% Ip Man Wing Chun from a syllabus handed down from Grand Master Ip Chun. However, we have added a few elements to our syllabus as no one style can cater for all situations effectively and a syllabus should only ever be treated as a guide and not written in stone.
The importance of a syllabus is to teach fundamentals that can be learned from and grow the students knowledge through understanding, not to be applied in a robotic manner, this will never work in the real world against aggressors that do not form an attack in a specific way.
It should always be remembered that each student is an individual and what works for one may not work for all. For that reason any martial art has to be flexible to the point that it can be tailored to a students properties without compromising the properties of the technique.
Lun Kuen is a happy place to train, we train hard, have a joke and explore the conceptual side of the art. All students are treated equally, with respect and questions are encouraged.
I’ve been told that training at Lun Kuen has had a positive effect on peoples lives and long may that continue.
I’d also like to thank the friends and students of Lun Kuen for their continued support during times when others try to publicly discredit the school and my teachings for reasons I don’t even want to entertain.

Lun Kuen has been teaching the art of Wing Chun and applied self defence techniques for well over 30 years and at least two other schools in the area have their origins from Lun Kuen.

If you want to learn self defence skills, you may be interested to know that the Lun Kuen Academy will now be offering day time sessions at their studio in Ashley Road Parkstone.

Whether you are looking for a women only class or fancy mixing it up with the male students we have something for you.
Normal classes run Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 - 9:30 and Saturday afternoons starting at 4PM - 6PM
If you are interested in a daytime class we can offer Monday - Friday slots between 2PM - 4PM.

In August 2018, I collapsed yet again at work and I was taken into an ambulance. For years I actually believed it was just low blood sugar, and it was nothing physical that caused the collapse. I found out it was something that I struggled with in my mind, anxiety.
After I completed a six week course at Steps to Wellbeing via the NHS, I learnt new techniques and some ways of coping. They taught me to look at my triggers and to look at my lifestyle. I have good days and bad days. Days where I have to deal with many things and it feels like my mind cannot cope and I become overwhelmed. I then shut down and I get into a depressed state of mind.
But recently I have been having more good days than bad.
As it happened, I was approached by Stephen Lyons (SIFU Wing Chun Master) to create training videos for his martial arts classes as I promote myself as a freelance videographer next to my full time job. I was honoured of course, but also intrigued by the thought of trying martial arts. I quickly learnt that Steve helps people overcome their fears. He is a mild mannered, gentle soul, an inspiring teacher with a great sense of humour.

I was sceptical at first, as I have always felt physically quite weak. But after the first lesson everything quickly changed for me. I felt new energy and focus. I believe it can bring peace and a sense of harmony to anyone's life. Steve teaches everyone valuable life lessons and looks after all of us. Anyone can learn Wing Chun, it can really give you strength and confidence. The classes have given me determination, my body and mind feel stronger and I feel fantastic after each lesson.
It distracts me from my anxiety and my worries (thus making me less anxious). I feel healthier and I am learning to be calmer and I feel more balanced with myself and with others. I even sleep better after a session. I also can't help but feel a bit like IP Man after I learn something new!
I still have a long way to go, but I can truly recommend this to anyone. It has given me a reason to get up in the morning and seize the day, one day at a time.

As a female who had experienced serious domestic violence overseas, I promised myself as a survivor that I would never fall victim to any attack in the future.
As an Aunt to my amazing nieces, I never wanted them to experience what I had lived through, so I looked for a martial arts club where I could learn Wing Chun with my eldest niece, as I knew a couple years later she would herself be off traveling overseas.
