Hello! I'm Josh Rees. The instructor here at Maggie's Voice Mounted Archery here's a little about me and my journey so far for those who don't know me!
I'm 29 years old and began riding at 20 when I met my lovely and talented partner Elinor Brewer; Frankly a pre-requisite for a long term relationship with such a passionate horsewoman and trainer.
Perhaps as a show of commitment, just 11 months into riding (and the relationship) I completed the Man V Horse endurance competition on the legendary Maggie May.
Since then I have followed and supported El as she built and grew Maggie's Voice Equestrian Center along with her transition to bitless and R+ training. Almost every aspect of my riding is thanks to her especially the relationship I have been so lucky to build with our amazing horses. Especially Renn (Maggie's Daughter).
Over time I have had the opportunity to teach and support a wide variety of individuals as part of the Maggie's Voice team as well as train the horses. Equipping me with experience working with people of all ages and abilities including individuals with ALN. This coupled with having the chance to train and work with some of the best equine professionals in the R+ and bitless space has been a true privilege.
After a hiatus from serious riding El booked me on for a lesson with Epona Mounted Archers where Fiona had me immediately hooked! Which was fairly predictable seeing as my one true lifelong passion has been the precision lobbing of projectiles with nearly 2 decades of shooting sports under my belt.
This was followed up by taking part in a training camp by Alan Le Gall which really sealed the deal! I had to do more.
I set about training on renn both by myself and with Fiona to continue sharpening my skills.
Between me, Fi and El we also began introducing archery to more of the horses. This ongoing project has been a success beyond anything I could have expected so far!
We have found mounted archery and bitless R+ training to be a natural fit.
So as soon as the opportunity to train as a BHAA certified coach arose I jumped at it. We were in the fortunate position to be able to host the training which I absolutely adored and earlier this year I attained my Club coach qualification.
I feel I have found something I am truly passionate about in all of it's aspects. From competition, to teaching others and their horses and training our wonderful horses who are, of course ,the real stars of the show!
