As the World Cup begins, Trevi has a responsibility to speak clearly about the impact on women and girls.

In England and Wales, at least 2 million* are estimated to experience violence each year - an average of 5,480 women and girls harmed every day.

VAWG is a pattern of abuse, coercion, intimidation and harm that is already at levels considered a national emergency before a ball is kicked, but which increases – by up to 38%* - during major football matches.

But that is not about football, alcohol, a disappointing result, or any other external factor. It is about men who choose to use violence, control and fear against women and girls.

If you are worried about what may happen during or after a match, we urge you to seek support.

You do not have to leave your relationship to get help.

Safety planning can help you think through where to go, who to contact, what to prepare and how to leave safely if you need to.

⚠️ If you are in immediate danger, call 999.

📞 The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free and open 24/7. Call 0808 2000 247.

🌐 Locally, support is available via IDASP https://www.idasp.org/domestic-abuse-support

🏠 Trevi’s Women’s Centre is a safe, women-only service in Plymouth where there’s no wrong door. Call 01752 255758 during daytime hours, or visit trevi.org.uk
