St Mary's Church in Laira commemorates Thomas Richard Archer Briggs who was a remarkable Botanist who lived at Fursdon House on Blunts Lane in Estover. He was a Plymouth botanist and lay‑reader at Crabtree Mission whose life joined science with faith. He is best remembered for drawing attention to the extremely rare Plymouth Pear, a hedgerow tree that remains one of Britain’s most endangered native species. His careful observation ensured its recognition, and todaay it holds the unique distinction of being the only tree species protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981. Because of its rarity, seeds from its fruit have been deposited at Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank to safeguard its future. Briggs also preserved the lore of the Plymouth Strawberry in his celebrated Flora of Plymouth.
Annie Jenkin who was one of our members of staff but who sadly passed away in 2024 composed a poem that was published in an anthology of poetry about the Plymouth Pear. We would like to remember our colleague alongside the fascinating Thomas Richard Archer Briggs.
🔋 How are you recharging this week? 🔋
This week, I’m making space for some much-needed self care. Slowing down, being kind to myself, and embracing the little rituals that bring comfort and calm.
Whether it’s a quiet evening, a skincare treat, or simply saying “no” to the rush - it’s all about refilling the cup so I can show up fully.
✨ What’s your go-to way to recharge?
Let’s remind each other that rest is productive, and self-care is powerful.

Every September, people around the globe come together to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
This year’s theme is “Never too early, never too late”, highlighting the importance of brain health across all stages of life. Whether it’s through lifestyle choices, early diagnosis, or compassionate care, we all have a role to play in supporting those affected.
💬 Did you know?
Over 944,000 people are living with dementia in the UK.
Alzheimer’s is the most common form, accounting for around 60–70% of cases.
Early detection can help people live well for longer and access vital support.
Let’s use this month to:
✅ Learn more about dementia and its impact
✅ Support caregivers and families
✅ Share stories and raise awareness
✅ Advocate for better care and research
