🚀 Engineering Club Spotlight!

Check out these two brilliant UTC Plymouth students that have been busy in the workshop for engineering club, they wanted to show us how to use the vacuum former mould 👏 We think they could have a future career as presenters! 🤩🤣

They put their skills into action by creating a boat using the mould in our school workshop 🛶✨ A great example of learning that links directly to our STEM curriculum, where students explore real engineering processes, materials and manufacturing techniques.

If this kind of creativity and problem‑solving inspires you, why not join one of our clubs?

👉 If someone you know wants to get involved, they can speak to the teacher running the club at break or lunchtime or 👉 Wait for next term’s clubs to appear on Arbor, where you’ll be able to sign up!

🚢✨ What an incredible day at UTC Plymouth! ✨🔧

Yesterday, we had the absolute honour of welcoming Commodore Jane Roe, Naval Base Commander at HMNB Devonport, to UTC Plymouth, joined by our Chair of Governors, Pete Towell.

The purpose of the visit was something we are deeply proud of:
🔹 Gaining a clear understanding of our purpose as a UTC here in Plymouth
🔹 Exploring new opportunities for our young people within Defence
🔹 Raising aspirations across our whole community

Commodore Roe is not only a critical friend to UTC Plymouth but also a remarkable leader in Defence and an inspirational woman in STEM. Her journey, from junior engineering rating to one of the Royal Navy’s most senior leaders, is a testament to determination, ambition and excellence.

She and Pete spent time seeing our UTC vision, mission and values in action, particularly within our STEM areas. Our students were fantastic! Confident, articulate and proud to share what they’re learning and why it matters.

We are excited for the opportunities this visit will help unlock for our young people. 💙⚙️

🔥 SCIENCE + FOOTBALL = WORLD CUP FEVER AT UTC PLYMOUTH! ⚽🧪

Our Science Department is getting students World‑Cup‑ready with a Sweepstake! Loads of students have already picked their teams and we’ll be tracking the competition to see who comes out on top 🏆🌍

But of course… we’ve linked it all back to the science of football 👀🔬
From the forces behind the perfect free kick, to the biology of elite athletes, to the sound waves roaring through the stadium, football is FULL of real‑world science!

Here are some awesome science‑football facts:

⚽ A power shot can reach over 70mph, thanks to Newton’s Second Law (force = mass × acceleration!)

🧠 Professional players make up to 200 decisions per match, showing off incredible reaction times and neural processing

💨 The curve on a free kick happens because of the Magnus Effect — spinning the ball changes air pressure around it

💓 Footballers’ hearts can reach 190+ bpm, showing just how much aerobic and anaerobic fitness the game demands

🌱 Modern football pitches use sustainable hybrid grass, mixing natural fibres with tech‑engineered materials to reduce environmental impact

We can’t wait to see which team takes the win and which student scientist predicted it! 🏆🔭

Stay tuned for updates as the World Cup unfolds… 👀

🌟 What a fantastic start to the term at UTC! 🌟

Our amazing Year 7 & 8 students have done it again, they’ve won another writing competition! ✍️🏆

Even more exciting… several of our students have been selected to have their work published in a Stranger Things–style saga! 📚⚡️ How incredible is that?

We’ll be sharing photos as soon as the books arrive, so keep your eyes peeled 👀✨
