This week we welcomed James from Early Insights into Bright Beams to spend time with us reviewing our nursery provision, observing our environment, routines, staff interactions and the experiences we provide for the children.
We’re really pleased to share that the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. James described Bright Beams as having a strong foundation, with a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and professional staff team, positive relationships with children, generous spaces and a wide range of resources and learning opportunities. He also highlighted the thought and care that has gone into creating an environment where children can play, explore, learn and have fun.
A particular strength identified throughout the visit was our team. James noted the warm and positive atmosphere across the nursery and observed staff getting down to children’s level, joining their play, talking with them and using those interactions to support their learning and development. He described the staff team as a significant strength of Bright Beams.
Our planning and assessment approach also received some lovely feedback. Our planning boards were described as a real strength because they allow the whole staff team to understand and contribute towards children’s individual next steps. Our I Can flowers were also highlighted as a simple and accessible way of showing children’s development and something that can be easily understood by both staff and parents.
There was also really positive feedback about the nursery environment itself. Our entrance and welcome area was recognised for helping families feel welcomed into the setting, our outdoor area was described as a lovely, generous space with huge potential, and our range of books and resources across the nursery was highlighted as another strength.
Our baby room was described as a lovely, calm and well-organised space, with plenty of floor space for babies to move, explore and play and a very good range of resources available to them.
As part of any good quality review, James has also given us some small areas to continue developing. Importantly, the report makes clear that this is not about making wholesale changes or simply adding more resources, but about refining what we already have and making even better use of our space, resources and routines.
Over the coming weeks and months, some of the things we’ll be working on include:
- creating even clearer areas within the downstairs room, including a more defined creative area and a larger book/quiet space;
- continuing to refine group times and transitions so they are purposeful, calm and appropriate for the children taking part;
- giving children even more opportunities to develop independence through everyday routines, mealtimes and accessing their own resources;
- developing our outdoor environment further, including more opportunities for nature, growing, loose-parts play and physical development;
- refining children’s next steps so they are consistently clear, specific and easily understood by all members of the team;
- and creating even more opportunities for parents and families to contribute their skills, interests and ideas to the children’s experiences at nursery.
We’re incredibly proud of the feedback we received. One of the most reassuring parts of the review was that the recommendation isn’t to change what Bright Beams is — it is to keep building on the strong foundations already in place and continue refining the provision as we grow.
We never want to reach a point where we think, “that’s good enough”. We want to keep reflecting, listening, improving and making Bright Beams the best environment we can for our children and families. 💜🌱
