Visionary sculptor and painter Naum Gabo was born on this day 1890.

Gabo believed in the power of art to communicate across social and cultural boundaries. A pioneer of international Constructivism, he created work responding to the ideas, materials and technologies of the 20th century. A method known as 'stereometric construction' was central to Gabo's work, by which form was achieved through the description of space rather than the establishment of mass.

In 1920, Gabo declared: 'we take four planes and we construct with them the same volume as of four tons of mass.' In 1915-20 Gabo used this law to construct heads and figures that demonstrated this.

'Head No.2', seen here, was shown at Tate St Ives in Gabo's major exhibition in 2020. https://bit.ly/3J9JpoK

Angie Wickenden running this fab workshop. I’ll be going! Never have to buy string again.

Learn how to make a foraged plant material looped bag. Based on cordage making, this is one of the oldest technologies known. Native Australians have been weaving like this for 50K yrs as a living tradition. My own practice is inspired by experimental archaeology when I made nettle cordage to make Bronze Age potter called Trevisker which has cord impressed Decoration, for an episode of Time Team. You will never look at a ball of string in the same way again and maybe never have to buy string again. Embedded in seasonality, landscape and sustainability, this is a mindful, meditative practice which maybe help to provide tools to face the climate crisis. Various plant materials will be covered such as nettle, phormium, crocosomia, dandelion, juncus, fireweed(Chamaenerion angustifolium).
