YEAR 13 STUDENTS DRESS FOR EXAMS:

We are incredibly proud of our Year 13 students who come to the end of their exams on Friday. Throughout, they have behaved with maturity and positivity and impressed us all with the way they have looked after themselves and each other. Yesterday, some of the Maths cohort chose to mark the occasion of their last exam by arriving in their best formal attire: looking ready to take on the world!

Last Thursday our Year 12 students visited the University of Exeter Campus.

We were greeted by Next Steps South West, along with current student Ambassadors, who also gave us an insight into what it is like to be a university student.

We also had a quick look at student finance and how the student experience could be accessible to all students - along with understanding how and when monies would need to be paid.

Student Ambassadors also talked to us, explaining what their campus had to offer and answering any questions throughout.

We were also given a tour of the campus and saw everything from lecture theatres right through to the amazing sports facilities the university has to offer.

Students have now been asked to research further into their chosen field, such as university degrees, higher apprenticeships or apprenticeships.

This Armed Forces Day, Pete Ogburn’s memorial bench will be unveiled at 3.30pm. The bench will be located near the flagpole above the Belvedere (wedding cake) almost opposite Elliott Terrace.

Without Pete, the national network of Service & Veterans’ children would not exist and be the success it is today.

Pete’s Father served in the Royal Navy from being a boy sailor and his Mother had been called up during the War. Pete therefore had a real empathy with the children he supported and an enthusiasm and determination to let their voices be heard. Pete served in the Royal Navy for twenty-two years, including the Falklands Conflict and disaster relief in Sierra Leone.

Pete’s involvement with MKC Heroes came when he accompanied his wife, Heather, a Senior Education Officer in Plymouth (with responsibility for military families), to a meeting of 40 local school children. They met to discuss their lives, what military service was like for children, and what would help them. During the discussion, one child said; "Why can’t we have one of the flags Sir, like the old men in blazers have? We could get together and have a parade and be a club?" Others joined in, saying they could set up clubs in every school in the United Kingdom and beyond, so that everywhere they went they would have a friend. Pete took up the challenge and devised a plan to help her enable schools to create clubs that the children named Her Majesty’s Schools Heroes (HMS Heroes).

During a chance meeting on Plymouth Armed Forced day, Pete met up with Roger Garratt, who immediately saw that the Royal British Legion could help. HMS Heroes became the Military Kids Club Heroes (MKCH). Pete liked to give his wife all the credit for MKC Heroes, but he was the real driving force; accessing funding for grants; being the treasurer, secretary, webmaster; competition designer and deliverer - organiser of anything and everything MKCH and so much more.

Our Year 12 Geographers were on fieldwork today. They were carrying out a wide range of qualitative data techniques in and around Plymouth city centre to help them plan their own NEA (non-examined assessment) for their Geography A level 👣

They had been working in small groups to assess the quality of the environment, and the ‘health’ of the city centre ♻️

I would like to introduce the new Handball Club in Plymouth...

We have just restarted Handball, offering sessions at Plymouth University (see image) 👀

During the summer period, sessions will be every other week, hopefully leading to regular weekly sessions and
opportunities to compete from September.

The sessions might be interesting for students who choose Handball for GCSE or for students with a general interest in the sport.

The summer sessions will be mixed sessions (male/female and youth/adults), whereas the September sessions are planned to be split at least into junior and adult sessions (depending on participation)

(The poster says 16+, but 15 might be OK if physically capable to play with adults)

Please be in touch in case of any questions.

With so many careers to choose from, students interested in journalism and broadcasting were given the opportunity to meet Mr Danks from the BBC News on Friday 20th of May.

Mr Danks kindly shared insights of his career and allowed students to discover a little more of how journalism has adapted over time - not only due to the pandemic but also with more technology becoming available.

We saw footage from main stream equipment like handheld cameras, but also 360 degree cameras and even drones - to allow the viewers to enjoy a range of angles.

Students were given an insight into the day-to-day running of the BBC studios here in Plymouth, including that of BBC Radio Devon. Students now understand the processes involved; from initial storyline to the finished product as seen by the viewer / listener.

Afterwards students tried out some of the recording equipment and enjoyed testing a variety of sounds and camera angles. A great insight was had by all, and a special thanks to Mr Danks for taking some time out of his busy schedule to talk to our students.
