🌟 Exciting News: Strengthening Careers Guidance at Cann Bridge School 🌟

At Cann Bridge School, preparing our pupils for adulthood is at the heart of everything we do. We are therefore delighted to be strengthening our long-standing partnership with Careers Plymouth by commissioning additional Impartial Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) for our pupils and families in Year 9.

For a number of years, Careers Plymouth has supported our transition planning processes, including contributing to the completion of Options Appraisal Forms for pupils approaching key transition points as they prepare to leave Cann Bridge School. The Options Appraisal Form is submitted to the Local Authority to inform them of a family's preferred Post-16 or Post-18 provision and support future placement planning. This valuable partnership has helped families make informed decisions about future pathways and opportunities.

As part of this enhanced offer, pupils and families will have the opportunity to work with Kate Cable, Careers and Employability Coach, who holds a Level 6 Qualification in Careers Guidance. Kate will spend time getting to know each young person, exploring their interests, strengths, aspirations, likes and dislikes. Through this person-centred approach, she will work with families, and pupils where appropriate, to develop an individual Careers Action Plan, helping them to consider the full range of Post-16 and Post-18 opportunities available.

Parents and carers will be invited into school to meet with Kate alongside their child to explore future pathways, discuss aspirations and identify suitable next steps. This may include opportunities to visit potential colleges, training providers, supported internships, employment programmes and other specialist provisions, ensuring that when the time comes to leave Cann Bridge School, families feel informed, prepared and confident about the future.

We will also use the information gathered through this process to help tailor our curriculum and preparation for adulthood offer, ensuring pupils develop the knowledge, skills and experiences needed for their chosen pathways. Discussions and outcomes will also help inform EHCP Annual Reviews and pupils' Personalised Learning Goals.

This personalised careers support complements our wider Preparation for Adulthood offer, including:

✅ Our comprehensive Transitions Booklet, available on our website, providing practical guidance and information for families.

✅ Our dedicated Careers Hub, located in our Meeting Room, offering literature and information about local providers, services and opportunities.

✅ Our annual Careers Fair, bringing together education providers and support agencies to help pupils and families explore future possibilities.

✅ Annual visits to the Skills Launchpad event, enabling pupils to discover a wide range of education, training and employment opportunities within the local community.

✅ Enhanced transition programmes for school leavers, including additional visits and tailored support with future settings to help ensure a successful and sustainable transition.

Recognising that this is the first year we have introduced this expanded impartial careers guidance offer, we are pleased to confirm that it will also be made available to pupils in our older year groups this academic year. This will ensure that all families have the opportunity to benefit from the same high-quality, independent careers guidance and support.

These additional careers guidance meetings will take place during the Spring Term, and Jennie Ferrett will be in touch with eligible families in the New Year with further information.

We are excited to continue developing our careers and transitions offer, ensuring every pupil and family has access to high-quality, independent advice that supports confident, informed decision-making and successful preparation for adult life.

Is My Child Too Ill for School? 🏫🤒

We understand that deciding whether your child is well enough to attend school can sometimes be difficult. While some illnesses require children to stay at home, many common coughs, colds and minor ailments do not necessarily mean a child needs to miss school if they are otherwise well.

To support families, we are sharing the NHS guidance poster below and encourage parents and carers to use the NHS online checker for trusted advice:

The NHS guide provides clear information about common childhood illnesses, when children should attend school, when they should remain at home, and when medical advice should be sought.

✅ Mild coughs and colds often do not require absence from school.
✅ Keeping attendance high helps children maintain routines, learning and friendships.
✅ If your child is unwell and unable to attend, please notify the school as soon as possible and provide the reason for absence.

🌟 Introducing the Post Bridge Café at Cann Bridge School! ☕🍪

Did you know that our school café is much more than just a place to enjoy a drink and a snack?

At Cann Bridge School, we carefully develop our learners' independence, communication and work-related skills throughout their school journey, preparing them for adulthood and life beyond school.

🍎 It starts in the classroom, where pupils learn important life skills such as:
• Sitting and enjoying snack with others
• Making choices and communicating preferences
• Helping to set up and clear away
• Taking simple orders and developing social interaction skills

📦 In Key Stage 4, learners take their next steps through work-related learning opportunities such as running our popular Snackbox, helping them to develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork and customer service skills.

☕ In Key Stage 5, students take on the exciting challenge of running our weekly Post Bridge Café. Supported by staff, students develop valuable employability and independence skills, including: • Customer service
• Taking orders
• Handling money
• Preparing drinks and refreshments
• Cleaning and preparing work areas
• Communicating with customers
• Working as part of a team

Our well-established café provides a meaningful, real-world work experience within a familiar and supportive environment, helping students build confidence and develop the skills needed for future education, employment and independent living.

Whether purchasing a hot chocolate, juice or a tasty treat, every visit supports our students as they develop the confidence, communication and independence skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

💰 A reminder for parents and carers: Please send your child in with some small change on café days so they can independently purchase their refreshments. Learning to make choices, handle money and interact with staff are all important parts of the experience. We recommend sending no more than £1 per visit.

♻️ All money raised through the Post Bridge Café is reinvested directly into replenishing refreshments and further developing our work-related learning opportunities, ensuring even more learners can benefit from these valuable real-life experiences.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 In addition to our Friday Café, we also host regular Family Cafés, providing opportunities for families to meet and connect with one another, spend time with their child's class team, and hear updates about learning and progress. Throughout the year, we also run themed cafés featuring external professionals and guest speakers who offer advice, information and support for our families.

Together, We Cann develop confident, independent learners who are ready for the future.
