In year 5 and 6 the children have been exploring the artist Alberto Giacometti. He created sculptures using wire and bronze. Over this term the children will create their own wired sculptures. They have started the planning process and practiced some skills by creating different poses using manipulated tin foil.

What a fantastic lunchtime we had today as we launched the next phase of our Active Lunchtimes initiative!

Children enjoyed a range of exciting activities including giant Jenga, chess, snakes and ladders, Connect Four and skipping ropes. It was wonderful to see so many pupils engaged, active and having fun together.

A huge thank you to our PTFA for generously funding these resources and helping us create even more opportunities for enjoyable and active playtimes.

We were also delighted to see our Year 1 and Year 2 children taking part in football sessions led by our PE coach, developing their skills, teamwork and love of sport.

It has been wonderful to see the children making the most of these opportunities, building friendships, staying active and enjoying their lunchtimes even more.

Last week, Smeaton Class had a fantastic time taking part in our school orienteering course. The children showed great teamwork, determination and problem-solving skills as they navigated around the grounds, following clues and working together to find each checkpoint. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they read maps, made decisions and supported one another along the way.

Firestone and Mayflower class were visited recently by Rachel from Devon and Somerset Fire and rescue. She explained what the fire service did and the children explored some of the safety measures they need to be aware in the home and in the community. Some of them even had the opportunity to try on some of fire kit and learn about why it is special. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience!

This term in Art, Year 5 are exploring the work of Alberto Giacometti, a Swiss artist best known for his tall, thin sculptures of people.

We have had a fantastic afternoon experimenting with sculpture, using foil to practise bending and twisting carefully in order to create different human forms. The children showed great creativity and perseverance as they refined their shapes.

Over the coming weeks, we will build on these skills as we begin to design and plan our own wire sculptures, inspired by Giacometti’s unique style. We are excited to see how these ideas develop and look forward to sharing the finished sculptures with you soon.

Smeaton Class have been busy little gardeners! Last week, the children enjoyed painting their own pots before planting sunflower seeds today!

They showed fantastic creativity and teamwork, and we’re so excited to watch their sunflowers grow over the coming weeks. We’ll be keeping a close eye on them as they begin their journey from tiny seeds to tall, bright flowers!
